Hi all, need help please. My wife was going to work this morning in the snow we had in NJ, about 8" now....She called me very upset that she lost her pear earring that was set on a very thin yellow 14kt post, I have the other earring and it is not registereing on my dfx, I have just tried the dx-1 probe... I have a m6, mxt, vx3 to try next. Any advice with settings to locate the smallest earring post, is greatly appreciated. I have a bigfoot,l, as well as 5.3, dd12, 300, 950 coils... What program/settings is recommended. Using the dfx and the dx-1 probe I tried prospecting and the jewelry mode and no sound..... which frequency would be best? Will the dx-1 probe work on my vx3 any better and which setting. I am trying here before I have to replace it. It is about 3/8" long and about .020" thick the catch is paper thin as well. My detector didn't beep even with the catch on the stud. If anyone can advance this post to the proper channel that would be great.

Thanks all

Eric

Your best bet is the VX3, prospector program W 5.3 coil. I doubt the DX-1 would be able to see it in 22.5 KHz. Good luck in finding it.

I think Larry has given the best advice. I know this is a Whites forum but if you know anyone with a Compadre you might have a chance if the VX3 or MXT doesn't hit it in prospecting mode.

You will find it with a VX3 or V3i in prospecting mode or a MXT but dont forget the GMT.

Other things to consider. How large is the area ? If it is a small area wich it should be and not thousands of square feet ?

Get a large tarp and anchor it to the ground close to the suspected area. Move all the snow wich may held the pin over to the tarp and if you dont find it then it will be much easier when the snow melts.

Your best shot at finding it would be with either the M6 mounted with the 5.3 or MXT with 5.3 in C&J mode.
ZERO discrimination and just above preset on gain. Lock your ground balance. Watch your screen and dig / check All -10 to +20 VDI Targets.
Go slow. You'll find it.

Check all targets that don't register with a vdi very small stuff you will just get the all metal low end. Its probably going to sound like Iron test your wife's other earring for best response (while on the ground) and go from there.
Good luck

Or maybe borrow a 5" excellerator Detech dd coil to use on the mxt, that coil will do it.

VX3, prospecting program. Smaller coil such as the 5.3. Dwell on getting a reading on that second earring first. The V-machines of Whites will find clothing pins like those in shirt lapels in the ground. Prospecting mode runs in 22.5Khz which is the key frequency to use on small gold like this.

Again, getting a reading on that second earring for reference is a must, not so much for the reading but to see the machine SEE it. If you had 8 inches of snow coverage...you have a challenge to say the least. You'd probably be smart to get help, say from the LostMyStuff group. martin

ON second thought I would use a Gold Bug 2 on boost with low mineral setting and tiny 3x6 coil, that is a tiny target, maybe 1.5 grains in wt.

Yes if you have access to a Gb2 or gmt or even a old gm3 that is the best bet. But I have hit studs with my SST And G2 but they almost always sound like small iron or a regular paper staple.
What is the ground like under the snow where she lost it?

Thanks all for the replies, I am waiting for the snow to melt a bit, we just got hit with more yesterday and has a nice top coat of Ice on it. I will try the tips you sent over the weekend. The funny thing is it's probably a $40 earring to replace since I am a jeweler.. The sentiment is priceless to my wife.

Keep em coming
Eric

PS, the metal detector probe from harbor freight on any setting does not register the tiny post, nor does the dx-1 probe on the dfx but yet to try it on all metal mode on the existing earring I have to test settings with.

I use a Whites Surfmaster II at beaches, and in the past I've found many earring posts. I run as much sensitivity as I can and still keep the detector stable, and then just turn the discrimination dial until it turns on and not much further.

I tried, it's a very trashy parking lot with ashphalt,
