My very FIRST silver spoon!

[attachment 271076 spoon.jpg]I found a spot where people have been dumping bricks and demolition stuff into the lake a long time ago..The bricks are falling apart, so I knew it was old.
I hit a solid Q signal in waist deep water and went after it. I kept scooping through the busted up bricks, mud and sand. Finally pulled it up, 20.5gr sterling, with 3 hallmarks and Pat. 1910 on it. Maybe I'll now be able to make one of those rings like John Edmonton does! Lots of interesting stuff down in here, got another wheat penny, and a copper ring. I had to wear the waders today since its been cold and raining all weekend, I need to get out a little deeper.
Yesterday I drove down to the boatramp before sun-up and watched it rain to be danged! I sat there thinking about whether or not to go in.."Well, I thought, "I didn't get dressed up for nothing" so I unloaded my kayak and put the Pro, scoop, a cup of coffee in it and paddled across a body of water and hit where the duck hunters usually set up..lots of brass shells as you can imagine, and also a lot of lead! I got a big lead ball that's not in the picture as well as all this stuff, a couple q's, and 3 d's..Its been in the low 50's and blowing rain out of the north all weekend, nobody at the beach, so these little secondary spots are nice to have.

Welcome to the Silver Spoon Society! When you're finding sterling spoons, the demolition was likely from a fire or other disaster, so there's probably more to be found! Remember to extend your pinkie while slurping soup with your new sterling silver spoon! You might even find some marbles in your scoop!

There was a lot of melted metal down in here as well, and the way those bricks were crumbling, and that little copper decoration could be from a dresser or something...the more I think about it, I bet you are right...maybe Grandpas jar of silver or gold coins are down in there in a melted heap? I better go and give that area another shot. Thanks Dan and John, I've found a lot of spoons, all stainless or junk, so this one was a treat, I'm paddling a kayak I built out of wood, its very light, 28lbs, and has a large open cockpit to haul all sorts of gear.

Very cool finds, Mud! That spot definitely sounds worth hunting again. Is you kayak home made, or from a kit? I would like to see a picture of it, if not too much trouble. My dad is looking into a wood kayak kit to build.

Check out the Pygmy kit boats...have a look at the Coho model...reasonable..I used the pygmy coho for an idea of what I wanted, just with a large cockpit instead of the standard size. Pygmy has some sweet looking boats. I build by eye, so its sort of fast and easy. Kayaks are tough to build to get them right and true and balanced...if he's gonna do one, he may as well do two, since its usually a lot of 2-3hr time bursts to build just one.

Wow, that is a beautiful craft! Amazing that it's only 28 pounds. Yeah, they didn't have metal detectors back then, so lots of precious metals likely wound up in the dump truck :detecting:

Mud, thanks for the kayak pics and info. That is one sweet ride! I'll pass the Pygmy kit info on to my Dad. He just moved to a new home in a lake community and is interested in building one when he gets his shop set up. Chip
