My V Nickle!!

If you feel you must clean it then you may want to try a rpoduct by Eagle One called: NEVER-DULL found in the automotive department of your local Wally World. It's a cleaner and polisher for wheel rims. Works wonders on large cents. If that doesn't do it for you then try CLR but make sure you rinse it thouroughly and coat it with valeline. Good Luck!

1891 V Nickle, not as clean as I would like, but still pretty cool!

All the nickles I've found, V's, shield's, buffalo's and the new stuff have came out of the ground looking like yours except for the I think 1942 thru 45's. Unless they were dropped real recent to your hunting. I don't think cleaning these will affect their value since a coin collector probably wouldn't want them anyway. Of course with it being your first old coin, thats terrific! I don't throw any of them back! You should go back and hunt that area again, it might even have some silver nearby. I've used a product on some of mine, can' t remember what the name is exactly, maybe nickle-leen?? but I bought the stuff at books a million in the coin collector section. It will take some of the gunk off and that is as good as its going to get.

That makes it sound so much older doesn't it ?

Thanks for everyones advise and comments!! I did also find a 47 wheat in the same area, I went back last night for quite a while, but didn't find anything. I think it has been searched pretty hard for silver being that it is the home site of the guy who founded my town in 1890. But who knows, they might have missed a few! I am patient, being that was the first old coin I have found since I started a year and a half ago. Hopefully I can get permission today to hunt a old house site that supposedly when my grandpa was a kid, he and a few friends snuck into the attic and found a old civil war trunk full of swords and a confederate uniform.

You probably found he V nickel because it is more difficult to find than the copper and silver coins. On the positive side, that means there could be a GOLD coin or ring that hasn't been found yet. Good luck!!

Nice nickle. I've gotten Indians in that date range but not nickles or silver yet.
Congrats!
