My Used Elite

The rings in the top right are junk. The top left is silver and the jungle head ring is silver and gold. The coins. The 1923-p Standing Liberty Quarter and the 1906-O Barber half were found on the same outing. The other coins I have found are: 1832 half dime with a hole, 1853-p half dime (with arrows),1865 3 cent nickel, 2 mercs,1964-d dime,1947 Canadian dime.
Not to bad for a used Elite and in a months time.

Those are some nice finds:clapping:

Any info on the Navy ring? From a particular location/station?

Those are some nice finds; and a honking big diamond on the one ring, but they all add up. Getting to the right locations makes a difference; were these beach finds? I'm stuck in the clad world right now for the most part, but I'm finding things that tell me there should be silver around, if not gold as well, but I'm new to the GT, so I'm not too worried about that. It sure feels nice when you do get some good stuff though.

Out of curiosity - do you have a test kit of some kind for testing the gold? Yesterday I found what I think might be my first gold ring. I have a friend that is a jeweler that will be able to tell me for sure if it is; it's being cleaned up right now, so once it's cleaned, I may be able to tell from the stamp on the inside, but if not, my friend can tell me. But I'm looking for a test kit to be able to test silver or gold items that I find so I will know without having to bother him if possible.

Great finds, and thanks for posting the pics.

If your stuck in the clad world and are running into a lot of them. Dig them up.Everytime you take stuff from towards the surface you open a window. If you are in a trashy yard, you had better be digging up some of the trash. A person's yard is the best accumulation for goodies. The 2 rings I found in the one yard, I dug up over 9 dollars in clad. And what that says that a lot of clad means the area has never been hit. Cash and treasure are found together.

Those are some great finds, especially in such a short amount of time. Did you detect before the Elite? If so, what kind of machine did you have? I think you're the one who said he paid $400 for the Elite. That's a good deal. Sovereigns are hard to find, especially at good prices, unless they are the real old models and those can go in the $300 or $400 range. Where did you get all that stuff?

I'm envious of the half dimes. How did they read for you. What VDI # and was it a good signal? I've only dug one half dime and it was canadian.

That 3 cent nickle is a great find because those read the lowest of any coin...Well down in the foil range or so I think. I've got one 3 cent silver myself but never a nickle one. What possessed you to dig that signal?

Again, great job!

Oh, I'm digging most things right now - anything deep right now I'm passing on just because the soil is rock hard from being dry, but if it's within a few inches right now, I'm digging it up in this location - if the area has been hit, it would have been 40 years ago or more, if it was hit at all then. I got permission to hunt this area, and a lot of people over a lot of time have spent time there. I did find a couple things that were other than clad - can't really call it jewelry though; it's not fully junk, but it's not silver or gold either.

Still, when there is more moisture, I will be hitting the same location and going deeper - in the meantime, I'm cleaning up everything I reasonably can. I will have to take the s-5 too, in order to do a better job of pinpointing on targets in a particular section. The area I'm working is the quadrangle of a college. I have permission on the entire campus, but the quad is where they have had various parties, a graduation every year, and all kinds of other activities. Like I say, I don't think the area has been hit by anyone just because I'm finding a lot, close to the surface, from 1960 to now. Deeper sounds are bound to be older, but that can be misleading due to construction over the years too. I'm trying to hit the least disturbed areas first for now.

But yes, I thought about the trash-to-treasure ratio and how to go about dealing with that in this location. Even if others have detected on this campus, I doubt they got everything, and even then, it would have been a long time ago - I'm sure the GT gets deeper than they were digging if they were there. Even if I know it's a screw cap or bottle cap, I'm pulling it out just so I have better odds later.

I won't disregard any suggestion when it comes to working an area. A couple people said I am wasting my time doing this, but I don't think so...

Keep going back there. dig anything you don't normally hear. Many of my best finds came from reworking an area. Just relax and enjoy hunting. You will find things.

I had an Elite a few years ago. I made the mistake of getting an Etrac. There were a lot of problems with it. It ended up being a bad unit. So away that went. I have talked with several Etracers and they do not like to use them in trashy areas. So back to the Elite I went. It's the best thing for trash, that,s where I get many of my goodies.

I've seen your posts DD, very nice finds...make me envious will ya...
Actually you are doing it right removing the surface trash and goodies.
The earth is dry and hard where I'm at also even though it rained the whole day Friday.

That half dime with the hole in it...I've heard that people used to stitch thier coins into their clothing for safe keeping, but I guess they could also just have been wearing it around their neck too and that's why there is a hole in it. About a year ago a friend and I were hunting deep in the woods on top of a ridge. We must have found about 5 to 10 ax heads and log splitters from logging back in the 1800's there. The only coin found was by my friend. A large cent with a hole in it.

Again, how deep were those half dimes and what kind of VDI did they give you? Were they good signals too?

Once again, that 3 cent nickle is an awesome find in it's self. You know, in all my years of surfing the forums and detecting I don't think I've ever heard of somebody digging one of those. That's because they are the lowest reading American coins, even lower than a dollar gold coin. That's just awesome. What possessed you to dig that signal and was it good sounding? Being round I bet it had a nice smooth sound to it like a gold ring even if it was a low tone.

Just checked...That coin reads from 95 to 105 on the 180 meter. WOW! Well into the foil range. How did it sound different to you than foil, or did it? I bet it didn't have that fuzzy/funky foil sound of oddly shaped foil. Again, great job!

Hi, The top right that you say is junk what makes you say that? Is it because there is no marking inside the ring? Have you acid tested them yet? just by looking at the picture 2 look good to me. Check them out. I have found gold pieces with no markings many times.Good Luck! Walter
