My unappreciated and lonely vaquero

2 Much Trash

Well-known member
Here lateley I've had a little more concern about missing good targets detecting in iron infested areas. I guess because a few of the areas I've hunted these past few years have produced a lot of good relics except for those spots in these areas that are loaded with iron. I know there's good targets there but I've just not been able to separate them to a descent degree of success even though Im hunting with a "Top of the line VLF machine" with a lot of options, a lot of power, and in my opinion a damn good detector. I've done really well with this machine these past few years and I'll continue to to do so Lord willing. Several years ago I was still using a Fisher 1266, had been for 10 years or so, still have it, an awesome unit. But I felt the need to get with the program and get myself a machine with a screen and a tone that could inform me whether to waste my time and dig it or not. This would end my days of diggin' so much trash. I'm trying my best to make a long story short, so here it is. I did some tests in my back yard the last few days. My backyard is what you'd call heavily mineralized but not uncommon.. I dug an 8" hole and put an average eagle button in the bottom. Put 2 rusty nails on either side. My go to machine picked it up as iron, removed the nails and it still picked the button up as iron. I wouldn't have dug that signal. Did the same test with my other metered machine which is marketed as one of the fastest recovery speed detectors on the market. No signal at all. Took out my sweet ole 1266, no sound at all as well. The last 2 units had no response, nails or no nails. Went in the shed and pulled out the almost forgotten Vaquero. Set in up just to null out small iron, super tuned, ground balance, It hit that button with the nails like it was 3" down. Took the nails out of the hole, wham, same thing, took the button out, put the nails back in, no signal. Can't wait til first frost. Me and my neglected V may do a little damage this coming season. Stay tuned. HH :stretcher:

My vaquero with the stock coil works great in iron infested sites. it hits on small objects that my other detector missed. I try to keep the sensitivity below 10 and the disc. just above all metal. I'm surprised how well the stock coil performs.

It's hard to beat a Tesoro when it comes to finding good stuff in a pile of nails.

I agree with others here. Tesoro detectors handle iron trash very well. My Outlaw does an excellent job in iron trash I have found good targets in the same hole with nails and other pieces of iron trash many times with it. The Vaquero I had also did very well finding targets the same way ( a very good job with the smaller coil) but did not run quite as quiet as my Outlaw does.

You will do well with the Vaquero maybe even get surprised .

i got the vaquero back in april for my first detector. i was going to get the fisher f5. after coming across a few youtube videos, went with the vaq. and i am very pleased with it. getting more and more comfortable with the tone and guessing what it will be before digging. even passing up on some hits, 99.9% sure it is trash. it nails coins, even 8-9 inches deep. i dont supertune or power balance either. sell all the other detectors and run that vaq. you have found out for yourself how good it works...

If you know how to set up the Vaq its going to hit targets, the problem with all the new Fandagled machines is they do to much , kinda like using spell checker its so posed to help you but it miss spells more words than i get wrong maybe simplicity is better

Some times simplicity is beautiful...gotta love the Vaquero!

Yesterday I took my Vaq to a very difficult site I call the iron mine because it is infested with tons of iron, all sizes and shapes.
The very first signal I dug was my first soap token at 7" and I missed this thing several times with other detectors and coils.
It was effortless and easy for the Vaq to find this thing...surprisingly easy.
Sometimes simple is better.

I have found that I dont really like the vid machines. It might be because I started with a compadre but they just dont do as well for me. What I found is that I spend a lot more time analyzing the target and deciding not to dig than if I just dig the good sounding ones. Sure I end up with more junk but I also end up with more treasure. I have found 2 gold rings both with my compadre. I had a Conq umax, and Outlaw that were both awesome. I have been working with a Sovereign lately to run on the beach. Not the best park machine but it does well in the sand. Its not a beep and dig its a moan/yell/scream and dig. But the concept holds, I ran it today with the meter on and I know I passed up some good targets but the meter said they were probably canslaw. I always wonder what I am missing. Good luck with your Vaq, that will be my next machine.
