My turn to return a class ring.

New member
I went to a local lake beach early yesterday morning. Among the coins and pulltabs was this 2005 class ring from a local high school.
Lying right on the bottom, and the beach just beginning to be used, it had to have been lost only a day or so before.
Now I simply have to locate the young man who dropped it. No matching names in the local phone book, so its time to call the school administration office and see if they will give me the address or phone number of the person.
In this day and age.... I might end up In Guantanimo Bay prison!!!:yikes:
I doubt that, but the school policies are really tight about releasing any student information anymore. Rightly so, but a sad commentary on our "safer" America.
Anyhow, I'll start my search and se if i can get the ring back to this young man. It's a valadium, telling me he ain't made of money, and may well have earned the money for it himself.

Hi Bottomfeeder.

I found someones class ring last year and was able to return it to the owner.
The school cannot give you the owners name or address for obvious reasons, but they will contact the person and give them your phone number if you leave it will them.

I hope the owner of the ring is a little more gracious than the one that I found... the only reward I was expecting and would have accepted was a simple "thank you". I didn't even get that.
Instead the owners mother (with whom I spoke) wanted me to use my own money and mail it to them.
I just dropped it off at the school (my old High School) as the person was still enrolled. I'm sure this is the exception and not the rule though.

Good luck and HH,

James

I was wading about waist deep at a small campgound beach. I felt a wallet on the bottom with my feet. I got it up, figuring it was empty.
Lo and behold, there was seventy dollars in it. Also a kids ID from a small town near there.
I took everything out of it and dried it off at home, then called long distance and talked with the kids mother. She said he'd lost it earlier the same day while a group outing was at the beach.
I bought one of those insulated yellow envelopes and mailed it back to him with a note that included my address and phone number.
After three weeks and no response, I called again and got the kid that time.
"Oh yeah" he said, "I was gonna call you". Never said thanks, kiss my rear or anything.
I told him "DON'T lose it again"
I never got a thank you, or the several dollars I spent back, but I did the right thing, I figured the guy had a job stocking shelves or something, and it wasn't my money. I wouldn't have felt very good about keeping it.

If I find a ring or wallet and can track down the owner I will... just because it makes me feel good.

And the world needs more honest people like you.

Try leaving your name and phone number. Ask them to have the person call you. Then you can meet, check his ID and give him his ring. I don't think it's a sign of the times. I would not give out a students name and phone number either. All the post I read where someone returns a ring it usually happens with them giving their info. to the school and the school having the student call you or the school calling you themselves. Check previous post about returning rings and you will see what I mean.

You can call their 800 number(800-555-1212 directory assistance) and give them all particulars. They have a database of owners. They will relay your name & number and most likely the owner will call that day. Piece of cake. Returned 3 last year.

Very similar situation in 2003.....found recent HS grad's wallet in the water.....license, credit card or two, 100 bucks in cash....plenty of important stuff....took it home, let everything dry out, used 5 of his dollars to get it back to him priority....this was after an eternity searching for a phone number to maybe get a more direct return to him (ended up unlisted)......never heard a peep.....oh well...
Much worse was a wallet I found last year...almost 100 bucks....same stuff...got a USPS clerk's advice on how I should send it (whether to use return receipt, etc.)...it never arrived, and as bad as this sounds, I'm almost positive the clerk pocketed the package, knowing he'd have all that cash free and clear, with little to no recourse on my end. I filed a report to try and locate the thing, but it quickly dead ended. I'm usually more careful than that....live and learn.
