My Tom's Tuned CZ5 is almost complete,

Dan(NM)

Well-known member
I just received this e-mail this morning, I'm looking forward to getting the CZ into field now.

Hi Dan,

I am nearly finished with the full calibration/validation/certification of your unit. I have four more small validation/certification tests to perform. Results as follows:

1) 'Salt' balance was slightly out of alignment..... which affects the entire spectrum & calibration of the unit. Now..... it is 'per engineering design'.
2) Deep target audio smear did not exist....... no correction needed.
3) I boosted 'Salt' mode auto-tune/all-metal Sens a bit more.
4) 'Salt' Nickel ID was very slightly out of spec's....... and is now per engineering design.
5) 'Salt' Zinc ID was also very slightly out of spec's......... minor calibration performed.
6) I stabilized the electronics to a greater level of stability.
7) Grnd Bal internal set-point was slightly out of cal..... and is now in spec's.
:geek: 'Normal' Nickel ID is now CZ-3D "old coins" spec's.
9) 'Normal' Zinc ID is now CZ-3D "old coins" spec's.
10) Internal electronics are exceptionally clean. This is a early 1997 unit.
11) Unit was 10.6" on a clad dime in 'Normal' mode. Unit is now 11.0" on a clad dime in 'Normal' mode. This is with real-world (Florida) dirt.
12) Audio boost circuitry was exacting ......... no calibration needed.
13) I boosted 'Normal' mode auto-tune sensitivity a bit more.
14) ID at depth is a fair amount better than engineering design requirements.
15) Depth meter accuracy is 'CZ spec's exacting'.
16) Pinpoint function per engineering design.
17) Electronic stability is well above average.

This CZ is a very typical/solid/reliable CZ-5 platform.......representing the entire/exacting intent for this platform. Nice to see. I have 4 more small 'validation' tests to perform....... and should be able to finish this shortly.

You got an excellent report, Dan!

I had Tom do the cz-5 conversion on a unit I had. It's a bit pricey, I paid almost as much for conversion/calibration as I did for the detector. But I've been told it is quite a time consuming process and it sounds like it was worth it as your unit is an above average one.

Cz-5s typically don't get the depth the better cz-3ds do, but they are still deep and more consistent unit to unit. From what I've read, that's largely because those hot 1021 and 1121 3ds were built in 2004 and 2005 while the old Los Banos Fisher was for sale and in steep decline. I remember a post from Mike Scott a few years back. He said they had the slowest worker there, an 80 something year old man, doing the coil windings. People were bringing their pets and kids in to work with them. Everybody knew the company was for sale and their days were numbered. Then, when First Texas bought Fisher and rolled out the new flagship F75 in 2006, the more labor intensive and less profitable cz-3d went way back to the rear of the bus. According to Dave Johnson, for a while after FT took over Fisher, they were using a shortcut procedure that wasn't calibrating the cz-3ds correctly.

#14 and #17 of the report are especially good news. The one I had converted Tom rated "5" on a stability 1-10 scale, 11.1 depth, and it was a good detector. Your stability appears significantly better than the unit I had, and that's

I'm deep into this unit now :) I plan on keeping it. I'm doing a mod from the s-style handle to a 1270 assembly handle, I'll post a pic when I'm done.
