My take on the VX3

Since it is already in the hands of some dealers and some of you have already pointed out the major points and even used one, here is my take on the new VX3. The best way to describe this unit is a junior V3. The days of the DFX 300 are limited for sure and I am surprised the DFX has lasted this long. I think there will be a strong market for a simple to use high end detector like the VX3 but for many of us who now own the V3i for it's advanced programmability will not be moving backwards to the VX3. The market for the VX3 is the person who wants the power of the V3i but is intimidated with all of the adjustments.

It is indeed a greatly simplified V3i that comes with the 950 conical coil and no rechargeable batteries, but it is wireless headphone ready. The expert menu is gone with most of those advanced adjustments. There is no VDI tone assignment and the audio tones are either one or 191. Discrimination is a 191 notch like the DFX. In three frequency mode, it looks like there is no Best Data and it is in Correlate mode full time in three frequency mode according to the owners manual. All adjustments can be made from the live control bar and there is a Main Menu that can be accessed as well. There does not appear to be a trigger forward for Analyze mode, just pinpoint lock as it is on the DFX. You have your choice of two filters, 5 or 12.5, 5 for mild ground and 12.5 for very mineralized ground. There was no mention if they were Band pass or High pass filters.

White's is calling this unit a turn on and go machine and running in correlate mode, it should be a very quiet, easy to use machine. I don't expect it to be quite as deep as the V3i because of the loss of Best Data, but if you want maximum depth, it still has your choice of any one of the three frequencies in singe frequency mode as well as salt compensate three frequency for the beach and fertilized fields.

I'm sure there is a market for the VX3 but for those who consider themselves an advanced user, the extra $300 for the V3i with rechargeable batteries, charger, D2 coil, expert menu, analyze screen and Best Data, the V3i still remains the best detector for the money IMHO.

Larry, you are 100% correct on you opinion of the VX3. To me it sounds exactly like Minelab's cheaper FBS detector, the Safari. It is a simplified SE with the same guts, but not all the bells and whistles. For someone intimidated by all the adjustments of the V3i, it just might have a place in the market. R.L.

I believe you do have access to frequency selections of 3-Frequency - Salt - 2.5kHz ... from the Live Menu.

I wouldn't like not having the 7.5 and 10 filters. Also I wouldn't want to always be hunting in correlate. JMHO. This will definitely be a quiet unit. Looks like the default for most programs will have to be the 5 filter.

That is true, all adjustments can be made from the live data bar, but according to the owners manual, you do not have the choice of three frequency Best Data, which is the best frequency for a certain target. Instead, it is the results of from at least two responding frequencies must agree in order to display the VDI and generate a tone response. This is what we know as correlate mode in the V3i and DFX. It is a very quiet mode eliminating a lot of false positives but at the expense of losing deep marginal targets that one frequency sees but the other frequency does not. In Best Data V3i, we would get a "hit" if only one frequency sees the target, the VX3 must have two frequencies that sees the target to get a "hit".

Yes, I understand the 3 frequency Correlate / Best Data option, or lack off in this case, but from the brochure that I have seen it looks like you have a choice of single frequency modes 2.5 / 7.5 / 22.5 as an option. Unless the example picture in the brochure is not accurate? It does include the "Deep Silver" program which is a 2.5kHz program? Hopefully we will get a preview by this time tomorrow.

Not until Tuesday. The trouble was some dealers showed them to people who then posted.

Yes, you can go single frequency as stated, "it still has your choice of any one of the three frequencies in singe frequency mode".

Honestly!Coming out party postponed by a day because of forum posting's. Might want to take that with a spoon full of sugar.

Yep... this is where the v3i will excel.

From the VX3 Users guide , which by the way is an awesome guide that explains many things in detail that the v3i user manual does not.

Concerning the VX3 "In 3 frequency mode the results from at least two responding frequencies must agree in order to display the VDI number and generate a tone response. This helps eliminate falsing"

The brochure and supplied info sent with the VX3 sure is much nicer than what I got with the V3i.:nerd: The nerd in me loves it.

It's out...Looks familiar!

Not long after the Vision v3 began shipping, I purchased one and then sold it a short time later because it didn't run smoothly where my other detectors did, and the number of adjustment options was daunting. With it's simplified menu the new VX3 has caught my attention (BTW: I also own a Minelab Safari and love the ease of use). However, I am wondering why Whites wouldn't keep the same DD coil used on the 3V? It seems almost all of the high to mid range detectors are using DD coils. Any ideas why the VX3 isn't shipping with the DD coil?

Looks like it will fill a good niche and have a feeling this box will keep pace with the V3i in a lot of situations but, don't know....will have to see if it is worth the $300.00 savings over a base line V3i.........sure is a great deal when compared to a DFX 300. (The DFX is a great machine.....but it's no V.) It'll be a week or so before I have one in my hands and gonna have to start working up a VX3 program to see how it does do in comparison.

The conical coil is quieter and more stable, I would think it is cheaper to manufacture as well. Two things White's is wanting to do with the VX3, a less expensive, easy to use V3. You can add a DD coil if you have very mineralized ground and some dealers might we willing to substitute coils if you don't want the 950.

Cheap vs practical?

I know a DD coil would make the difference for me. I don't like buying a detector and then having to turn around and buy a coil that should have been on it in the first place.

My personal thought is the concentric coil is old technology and has been replaced by the DD coil.

The 9.5 and 12 are still the coil of choice on the beach. The coil is a quieter coil and isn't bothered by EMI as much as a DD. It doesn't like bottle caps as much either. Along with the Vx3 hunting in correlate it will help those not wanting the hottest of setups. I think it will be a tamer deep machine.

I haven't seen it yet. Even though Kellyco has it for sale on line, Whites is still not talking about it on their forum. So I guess it hasn't been released yet, officially.
