My take on the Fisher Coinstrike Learning Curve & Difficulties

Just a little something to keep the forum lively. I thought I would post my experiences, and thoughts as a dealer & user of the Fisher Coinstrike.

The learning curve: I have noticed that the ones that have had the toughest time getting the C$ down pat, is the past heavy users of the Fisher CZ series of detectors. Because of the great differences of operations between both units, there appears to be a big stumbling block crossing over to the C$ from the CZ

I couldn't agree with you more and couldn't have said it better myself, Bill! I know there are some that feel the folks at Fisher really laid an egg with the C$ and although I might understand how they feel that way, (some of the things you mentioned) I couldn't disagree more. I too keep a couple CZ's around (3-D and 70) and appreciate and use them for their strengths, but the C$ is my single most favorite of the Fishers.

Funny you should mention the CZ-3d & the CZ-70. Those are the same I set aside for a choice of a CZ. :)

There is no one perfect detector, but the C$ can do things that no other Fisher can. We forget just how accurate the ID is on deep targets with the C$, just to mention one.

and yes, the sweep speed is totally different between the C$ & the CZ's, which was kind of tough to remember, low & slow doesn't always work with every machine.

BUT, what I found to be the biggest problem with the C$ was, it was the noisiest machine that I had ever used up to the point. It was considerably more so then the CZ's + when you add the digital display flashing a bunch of numbers at you constantly, it made me want to wrap that thing around the next tree I came to.

Now after it started to click, which for me, it took about 25 or so hours and a lot of playing around with the sensitivity & threshold settings and notching out a lot of stuff like zincs & nickels until I started to get used to what the C$ was telling me, then I gradually lowered my threshold down to -5 or -10 and sensitivity up to 8 or 10. Then when I got about 50 or so hours on it, I really started liking it. Now with hundreds of hours on one, it's become my favorite detector and nosing out the CZ70.

This is my second year with the C$ and before that I had a 1266X - as far as I'm concerned and from my experiences, I think the C$ was very easy to use and the best detector I have ever owned.

Granted, I have never used a CZ, so I can't compare the two, and that's probably why the C$ was so easy for me to learn.

My best advice to anyone purchasing a C$ - get a copy of Bill Ladd's field test and the troubleshooting guide, read them several times, and find lots of goodies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's name can be misleading. It's not just a "COIN"-strike but a more "all around" detector, as it's all metal mode is deeper than disc & has an underground following with Civil War relic hunters....

Hey Tony - still kicking & no snow (LOL) - been trying to get out diggin whenever I can, been busy with work and building a swingset/playset for my grandkids - plus it turned real hot and dry for a spell and my favorite places to hunt are old houseyards, so I hate to do much diggin and make someone's yard look like it has chickenpox!!! Have you been finding much lately??? Jim

I've only been out once since the DIV. I have entirely too many irons in the fire right now! I hope maybe to get out sometime soon. T.S. Alberto is paying us a visit right now, so we are getting some badly needed rain. Good luck diggin!

Maybe Alberto will stir up some goodies for ya - we've been dry here in Iowa also, sure makes for hard diggin!!! Jim
