My take on the At-Pro after running it through the paces

Keith Southern

Active member
Don't mean much but it's my take and it's a great 594.00 dollar detector..

It's the only Garret VLF machine I have found to perform in my dirt and consider having after using for awhile

about the machine....

Con's

1- the coil wobble problem causes falsing when reversing swing or maneuvering around obstacle's
2-Still has problems with small surface nail's High toning
3-Shaft wobble ( Easy Fix)
4- connector's are annoying same as the infinium don't line them up properly and pin's bend . (Back to the factory)
5- Arm rest way to close to the grip causes wrist fatigue when used for long hour's perfect for a 10 year old..

pro's

1- Very sleek looking
2-good battery system
3-nice tactile button's
4-Great audio
5-Good service department
6-Great price
7- waterproof
8- great depth on all conductor's
9-Works great in bad ground

Personal thinking

The machine is a great leap forward for Garrett...still needs time to work out the bug's if they wont to contend ...With he heavy hitter's..It's very noisy detector but it is also very powerful this is not a con so it's not listed as such it's just a detector that will have to be learned and you will have to accept the noise.... Cut out the noise and the depth will be gone..

The iron audio is great on large iron and small but be careful in bad dirt on small good target's at depth they will iron roll on the edge's with iron I.D. on..

Lot's of hit's when working rapid fire iron scenario ( Nail Blanket's) ..... little high clip's... at least in my dirt....best to keep iron I.D. off in this scenario and go back to pro disc and let the machine get what it can get...They should of allowed the tone break to work even in pro disc mode without activating it through the iron I.D. button unless you want it like that...the I.D. really enhances the iron signal too much ..Should of set it up like the gold bug does ...iron softer more quite but heard and set where you want it...

Pro-Mode

1-Null iron from disc setting of your choice........ Put it on 30 1-30 is silent 31-40 low tone
2-Put on zero and hear iron from 0-40 with low tone

Pro-Mode iron I.D. engaged

1- Hear iron with disc setting of your choice..............Put on 30 1-30 is really instead of a beep it's an all metal wah sound 31-75 midtone
2- Put on 0 0-75 mid tone

it would help to have the tone break adjust in pro mode without the enhanced iron audio from the Iron I.D. button..But it would require an extra button or remove the iron null option in Pro-mode and just have it null in standard mode...

Very beneficial for working iron more precise..

I see the iron I.D. mode for working open area's for the ability to hear target's right out of disc range or checking large target's if they are iron...not an all time mode for sure..

Machine is very deep and very sensitive and with some massaging in the engineer's lab in my opinion could be a true contender..

They have tried to please everyone with the design even down to the water hunter with the submersible element at a realistic price..it's about the right price point and proves that detector company's are gouging the heck out of us...But who ain't..

Just my take

Keith

Good report ! Thank you !!

Thanks for the report Keith. I am still trying to wrap my mind around the whole iron audio/discrimination thing so this helps.

Thanks Keith. I know you have run it through many scenarios. To me, I think the AT Pro has it's strengths with it's audio discrimination and water proofing. Let your ears do a lot of the work in conjunction with all that grey matter in between the headphones. The digital numerical numbers are OK, but not necessary. I know some people swear by them, and to them I raise a toast . I am looking forward to learning this machine well. It will take some time, but once I learn what it can do and it's limitations, I will be able to give a more intense opinion. It still needs some reports on how it performs in a freshwater environment, and also for the typical coin and jewellery (rings) hunters. I am looking forward tom see how well it does with gold rings. If the 15 kHz works as well on the AT Pro for gold like on the Scorpion, it will surely be a winner.

:usaflag:Very in-depth report...thank you.

it almost seems like they have discovered some excellent new technology, that can and will revolutionize the way metal detectors are made, but in thier excitement to share it with the world, rushed it into production, without working out the kinks, but im sure they will get it tweaked, that lead engineer they got, the one with the black slacks, he is a sharp fella.

How do you know they rushed it to production?

Go to Indiam Nation Detectors, he has a fix for the shaft wobble..

I believe they did, because of all of the problems they are having with them, either it is a heck of a coincedence, or I have noticed ALOT of complaints, on here, and my buddy just got his, and it has a problem right out of the box, that tells me adequate field testing hasnt been done. Also, they havent even been in water yet for the most part, so that could be a whole new set of problems. I am a fan of Garrett, but im an impartial fan. Im not trying to bash them by any means, Im just stating the truth.

Also, you nee to try harder to comprehend what you have read. I never said that I knew for sure that Garrett rushed the AT Pro into production,, I said .. 'IT ALMOST SEEMS" ..
Big difference there fella. Let me ask you, do you think it OK to have problems with a 600.00 dectector, right out of the box. ?

It is sad that Garrett cannot get the wobble out of their shafts, every release of their detectors have the same problem. How difficult is it to fix in pre-production. As an engineer myself, I never fail to marvel at basic design flaws, We should not need to spend more money on after market clamps, shafts right out of the box. A little forethought in initial design would have caught these flaws Willy is right on the money! Otherwise a great detector for the money and I give congrads to Garrett for avant guard technology. Yeah the detector itself is ahead of its time, a great double duty machine. It should create a banner year for Garrett.
