My take on cleaning silver.

After reading some of the other posts. I decided to cut the end off of a old charger....cell phone, cordless phone....I don't think it matters. I put baking soda and aluminum in the bottom of a bowl, hot water and the positive wire hooked to aluminum and the negative wire wrapped around the ring. It does not shock me. I put the ring in the water and watch it bubble off all corrosion. I also use a fingernail file (one with 4 sides for smoothing and buffing nails, ask your girl if your not sure what I'm talking about) to lightly buff out the pits in the silver, then keep working it as you move to the finer parts of the nail file. It works great on the round parts, not so much on the detailed parts, but does save a lot of time. I think it works pretty good. Maybe this will help some of you make your collection nicer, or just give you something to do on those rainy, windy, cold days. Here is a pic of the ring I just found and posted a hour or so ago. It's not finished, but gives you a idea of what I am talking about.

I've found that an SOS pad works well for final clean up on silver as well, especially if the surface is a bit irregular. One more tool in your arsenal for cleaning the many finds you pull from the briny.

sounds like you are using a combination of 2 different methods. I use electrolysis.......glass of water, charger with a north and south pole, teaspoon of salt and tablespoon of lemon juice. Plug it in and watch it cook as the black falls off the ring. Then I use some jeweler's rouge to polish it up.

for cleaning silver rings i just get some 0000 steel wool and clean it with that and if i want a shine on it instead of the brushed type finish i get with the steel wool
I just get out the buffing wheel on the dremal as its small size fits into the rings and buff away the scraches the fine steel wool made, takes about ten min. a ring if i go thru to the buffing part
