My Take on a 12x10 SEF coil used on a Sovereign GT.

I have written about the 12x10 SEF in the past.
I figured I would give it another plug.
The only reason I am plugging it, is because it is the best accessory coil I have ever used for any machine. First off I can crank the sensitivity with smoother operation than I can with the stock 10". My Sun ray S-8 also allows me to crank the sensitivity further than the stock. However, I can so obviously see that increased sensitivity turn into usable depth with the 12x10. I am telling you I am not sure as to why anyone thinks they need to go deeper than a Sovereign GT. Perhaps they want to speak to the Chinese voices coming out of the hole? Anyway, Target separation is also so much better on the 12x10 than it is on the stock 10". I never EVER use the pinpoint switch. I have mastered the art of the wiggle and pinpoint method with the toe and heel of the DD coil.. The 12x10 SEF is razor sharp at the toe and heel of the coil. It almost feels like Star Wars. LOL
This is going to be an Awesome beach coil as well. I got out this past winter and only ran the 12x10 in Auto Sens mode at the beach. What I have noticed is that the coins at extreme depths gave the famous sweet tone but this time the proportional audio of the GT was a tad louder with the 12x10 SEF.
And one last thing. The 12x10 is EXTREMELY SENSITIVE TO SMALL OBJECTS! Make no mistake. The 12x10 SEF is sensitive to even the tiniest of trash and treasure. ( it cuts both ways). However with the use of a Ron's 180 meter I am truly a Jedi in target id and ignorance laced with confidence of said trash.

And in closing I will say. I am basing this review solely on my in field use of the 12x10 SEF. CritterHunter asked me to mention my feelings about the 12x10. If it sucks as a coil I would say it. ( insert corny innuendo about sucking coins out of the ground).
It is a quality built coil with a strong cable and connector. Make sure that Kellyco has coil covers in stock to go along with your SEF coil. The bottoms have an awesome epoxy job. But you don't want to mess it up. Also, yes it is waterproof.

Great review, especially for those who think I'm too much of a fan boy about these coils to trust what I have to say, since you pretty much have made the same points I have about it. I too feel it's the best coil I've used on any machine over the years. Yes, it's waterproof...But make sure the coil cable nut on the coil is hand tight, then turn it just a hair more with a wrench. Not too much or it might crack. I've often heard these coils come with the nut loose for shipping purposes. I put some rubber cement on the threads of mine and also up on the cable where the rubber nut sleave will rest to insure further waterproofing just in case. Also did that to my other coils. It's lighter than the S-12 and of course lighter than the 10" Tornado if you ditch the coil cover and use spray on bed liner on the bottom of it, not to mention no hassle with cleaning under coil covers.

I use the last 2 or 3" of the tip of the coil to sniff around targets if I suspect there is a coin hiding well in there because it's even sharper than the exceptional center is. I also use the tip to PP and wiggle forward until I just hear the target. Then it's right at the base of the "V". The tail is also just as sharp, of course. Depends on which way you like to PP.

Thanks for the report. And remember everybody, this coil for the Sovereign is hidden on KellyCo's website and hard to find. I'd just call to place the order. Ask for JW because some of those people think they don't carry it because they can't easily find it on their website. If you tell them you want the Findmall special you get free shipping.

Jason,I have used the 10x12 SEF on the Explorer and never liked this coil.I'm going to pick one of these SEF coils in the future for my Sovereign and give it a try. Thanks Ron

Jason i can testify the SEF 12x10 will locate very small targets i have that coil on my DFX right now last year in a grassy field it found a lead bird shot ball 1/4 in diameter at least 7 to 8 inches deep !!! it took me over 10 minutes to locate it with my search probe lol, in MO it,s a amazing coil cant wait to get one for my GT . Critter i do not think the 12x10 is lighter then the S-12 if anything about equal in weight at least to me but i have not weighed them . :detecting: Jim

I weighed my 12x10 with and without coil covers and the cable wire included on a good digital scale. Others also weighed their S-12's that way and the 12x10 is lighter without the coil cover. In fact, if I remember right....My 15x12 without coil cover was lighter than the 10" Tornado with it's coil still on. Look up "Coil Weight Chart" or a variation of that and you'll find a chart I put together of BBS and FBS coil weights that I and others did.

One other thing, the extra coverage of the 12x10 makes things like beach or open field hunting a bit easier. I don't have to hold my steps back as much when hunting at a slow pace.
