hello, all. shown are the results of my short hunt with frank today just south of petersburg, va. the nice flatbutton and fishing weight was found last weekend [it was easter, couldn't get away for long] i found all four of the williams cleaner bullets in a line about 10 yards long. they once had a zinc washer on them at one time that was supposed to clean the bores of the musket, but fouled the bores instead, so many soldiers didn't like them and threw them away. the unusual old iron buckle has some twisted wires standing in for the tongue. a dress or coat weght followed, then a nice triangular knapsack hook, a dropped three ringer bullet, and a musket tompion rounded out the day. the tompion was used to plug the musket's barrel and to protect the inside bores from water damage. it's not very often that we recover the entire tompion, this one still has the cork remnants on it. several pieces of lead melt were found, too.
as always, all of these relics were recovered on private property with the owner's express permission. we wouldn't do it any other way. the weather was perfect, frank and i had a great time today. he found a like amount, but i'll have to leave it up to him to post his up. thanks for reading, and hh!
