my six bullet day with olddigger

GRAY GHOST

New member
hello all, after nearly two weeks of rain, olddigger and myself finally got in a 3 hour hunt today. we decided to go to the old mansion site in the woods, it being about a half mile from my house, and about a half mile from the battle of arrowfield church. we soon left the old house site and began hunting the surrounding woods. coming to a slight rise, we began finding shot 3 ringers and figured the yanks were shooting at the rebel forward pickets. i also found an odd shaped shot enfield, and a shot .44 ball. olddigger found a like amount, as well as some brass and lead whatzits. the complete iron watering bit i found is being cleaned now. it wasn't a boatload of finds, but we sure did have a good time. one can tell there was some cavalry action around, we must have found 10 horseshoes. enjoy, and hh,

Congrats, Grey Ghost !!

I found this forum today, since I just received my first own equipment: I ask for a starter a Quick Draw II. Today I was searching and studying it in my backyard but I was totally confused...

My interest is to search in battlefields of the Triple Alliance War (1865-1870, Paraguay against Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay) There was trenches that resisted for nearly 2 yrs: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curupaity where ALWAYS we find lots of shrapnel and bullets like yours. (We gone a few times with a friend that managed his Detector)

Could you help me ? WHICH calibration is the best to a Bounty Hunter, in order to search bullets ? When I tested today it appears that lead comports as a fine metal (totally different of a coin) What would be your advice to search this objects ? I mean... in order of Notch, Aut. Notch, Sensitivity and Discriminate controls ?

Thanks a lot for the help !

Pablo,
Paraguay, SA

hi pablo, and thanks for your interest. your english is good, and i can appreciate that. i happen to own a pioneer 202 just like yours, and usually set it low, about 9 o'clock on disc. and as high as the sensitivity will let me, depending on ground conditions. if your're relic hunting, run your discrimination as low as you can stand; sure, you will dig more iron, but you won't miss much either. if you find a bullet pablo, you will know it. and you will find most gold on the low setting too. just be patient and learn the machine, because metal detectors are not good liars. keep the coil low and slow, and success will be yours! i would, as well as many others on here, be interested to see your finds from the paraguyan war of 1865. so make sure you post your finds, and good luck! hh,

Thanks a lot for the advise, Gray Ghost ! and be sure that iron is a premium for me ! Photos ? those ones are from the last digging, with a friend that have an old detector (the conic one is a gift from him, but from the same place) Now you can see what I am searching... I'll give feedback to the forum.

wow, pablo. to see war relics from another part of the world, from the same period as our civil war, is just amazing. they are so similar in size, design, and purpose.. our minieball .58 cal. 3 ringers are also very close in appearance to yours. i see there's a nice conical shell, and a few pieces of shrapnel, and what looks to be a 12 lb. cannonball. i know of many people on this site who would like to see your relics from the paraguyan war of 1865. they are most interesting. thanks, pablo, and hh,

Yes ! the Minie was used by the Brasil forces, and was the same that you found ! The conical shell is unexploded, and the big piece of shrapnel is from a Withworth cannon, the ones with the hexagonal form.
Dig in trenches that resist nearly two years... and a place where 5000 people died in 5 hours... is great...
Regards,

Pablo

Pablo, a little word of advise. Unexploded ordnance can be very dangerous. I am retired military and I have seen a lot of accidents by people of good intention who picked up old ordnance. Depending on the composition of the filler in the shell, it could explode years after it was fired. I had the unfortunate luck of having to pick up the pieces of a nine year old boy who tried to throw an old 3.5 rocket off a bluff near the ocean. He was with a friend and had tried to throw it underhanded to see how far it would go. It went off between his knee and ankle. There was nothing we could do for him and his friend lost his left leg. So please be careful with that stuff

Thanks for the advise, Rivermarine ! Yes, I'm conscious of this, but the counsel always is appreciated !

Pablo,

Do you search on the Paraguayan side or on the Brazilian side. I don't exactly know where those battles took place.

Cheers

Pisco, I was digging in the Paraguayan side of the trenches, subject to a heavy allied fire by nearly two years. You can find there lots of bullets and grenade pieces. But next time I'll dig in the swamps in front them, now dried, since there was 5.000 casualties in a few hours, in the Curupaity battle
I think I'll found more relics there.
This is in the actual south of Paraguay. Goggle Earth: 27
