My Silver uMax Arrived Today and

Michigan Badger

New member
I took it to our local school for a little test. Not bad, within 30 minutes or so I dug about 7 coins and one was a 1946 wheat. The wheat was as deep as the indian pennies and merc dimes are around here. From the scale on my digging tool the wheat was near 6 1/2 inches deep. I wasn't too surprised because the Silver air tests at better than 10 inches on a Memorial penny (this is with the stock coil 8"). This is almost as far as my Tejon will detect a penny in the air. The Tejon gets maybe an inch more with stock 9x8 coil and max. sensitivity. But in the ground I'd say they're both very close in depth.

Excellent work, Tesoro! You can be proud of your little Silver!

My next test detector will be either the Explorer II or SE.

I guess all and all the silver will beat out the Vaquero if it comes close to the Tejon.

That's good to hear. I have been finding lots of good things with the Silver Umax. It is a great machine that I will use until it wears out and then I'll buy another. Frankly, I'm suprised we don't read or hear more good things about it. Badger - give your new silver a good run and let us know all the details.

No srprise to me. Selling detectors is the name of the game.

If you want a BIG surprise...put a 12x10 web concentric coil on your little uMax and then put it up against the big guns your buddies are using. Make sure your buds with their F-75's or SE's or DFX's are true buddies or there may be a loss of friendships. :starwars:

Not necessarily. I haven't used the V but have spent a lot of time with the Tejon. From what I'm seeing there's not much difference in depth between any of the Tesoros. The things that set one model apart from another are things like:

1. Coil size and type
2. Hunter experience and habits
3. Weather and soil conditions
4. Digging methods
and many more.

My guess is your Vaquero can find anything the Tejon can. I think the Silver can find anything the V and T can if used by someone who knows it well and if it's fitted with the right coil.

Also, weather conditions play a major part. Some days my Tejon may air test 14 inches on a quarter and on other days maybe only 12 inches. Humidity and other weather factors change a machines performance.

Many people only guess at the depth of finds. Some way over-dig. I dug a penny once that was about a foot deep until I noticed the round spot in the sod where the coin had been seated. When I pulled the sod the coin fell back into the hole and kept falling until I finally dipped it up from the hole. Thus your coins at 12-20 inches deep you read about.

The hot COIN depth for todays metal detectors is less than 7 inches deep. After that it's a tiny little signal barely audible that most would never bother to dig.
