My short 2 hour hunt, not to bad

gear box

Went out yesterday for a couple hour's, it's been a few weeks since I've been out and it sure felt good to get out again even though the humidity and heat were pretty bad. I chose the boulevards in front of the old hospital where I was born a long time ago. It's no longer a hospital and the building itself may be from the 30's or 40's. Not to old but the houses in the neighborhood are mostly pretty old so I gave it a shot. My first good target read 177-178 on the meter with a pretty good tone. I had my sensitivity set at the 2:00 position and the tone I got was a long smooth tone. For the fun of it I turned the sens. to minimum and the target disappeared but when I increased it to around to the 12:00 spot, it came back but was choppy. I dropped it back to 2:00 but ended up settling for the 3:00 position, this gave the smoothest and most clear response. Enough playing around,I pinpointed and dug a small plug. When I stuck the probe in the bottom it vibrated pretty fast and so I knew it wasn't very deep. I scraped a little dirt away and saw the 1898 Indian head in the bottom. Not a bad way to start. Moving up and down the grass I found a couple of wheat's. When I reached the end of the grass strip I got the real nice high tone with a 180 on the meter the perfect target. I knew it was going to be silver and sure enough a nice 39 Merc. was looking up at me,also not too deep. I got one more wheat and few pieces of junk. There's still plenty of boulevard left so I will be going back sometime soon. Not a bad hunt for a couple of hour's
Good hunting,Gary

You had a good hunt Gary. I haven't been out lately because I'm in the middle of building a new deck and some other honey dooo's but after seeing your finds I'm getting withdrawal shakes so I might have to take a break. Nice finds!

Gary, nice hunt.I never get tired of finding silver or IHs.Wheat's are nice to, good indicator of a great place to hunt and sometimes pay off big with key dates.I would definitely take time to do a through search at your site.Good plan and pay off.

Cool little hunt, and I like the info on playing with the sensitivity. Sounds like you might have found out what I did (?)- That setting it too high can degrade the target or even null it out?

Jame's I was using the stock 10 inch tornado coil that came with the machine. I feel that this coil does more than an adequate job. It seperates nicely and is easy to handle. I did use a SEF 10x12 for a short while and found a couple of Barber dimes with it both dimes were not too deep but I also found a couple of barber dimes and a nice SLQ with the tornado coil. The quarter was close to 71/2" deep but the dimes were not that deep either with the tornado coil. I guess what I'm saying is in my own opinion the tornado is as good as the SEF. But to be fair I still consider myself an amateur with the GT and I may not have given the SEF a fair shake.
Good hunting, Gary

I'd be interested in hearing any coin depth tests you do between the two. Most say the 12x10 is deeper than the 10" or even 11" Pro Coil.

Cool Hunt! Must be a good site to ya! Wish I could get out from all this work! Going fishing tomorrow with the boys ( 2 15 year olds...they clean the fish and the boat, I ll do the crabs)...get me some fresh flounder and some bushels of blue claws!! whos hungry??? Aaaaarrrrrrrrrr!!!

Hey Critter. I no longer own the 12x10 so I won't be able to do any testing. I kinda wish I wasn't in such a big hurry to sell it. I wouldn't mind giving it some more time. Oh well.
HH Gary

Hey Jerseydigger you're making me drool all over myself thinking about those crab's. Living up here in Minnesota we get the frozen kind. The wife and I got some nice chunky bluegills today so that will have to do. I'm gonna try to hit that hospital again this weekend, let ya know later how it went.
Good hunting Gary
