My second weekend out....not bad !

I got to hunt some last weekend and a few hours before lunch a couple days...now the test. I made it back to my grand parents old house....I have hunted it many times before, but something told me to try it again. Here is some of the better finds of today.[attachment 52727 Picture005.jpg] I know..the photo is bad. I have to work on that part too. Here is a 1867 shield nickle, a ???? Buffalo nickel, a 1912,1917,1927 wheat pennies,1893 Indian Head Pennie and a 1944 Mercury dime.[attachment 52732 img059.jpg][attachment 52735 img062.jpg][attachment 52733 img060.jpg][attachment 52734 img061.jpg]

I used the 10.5 DD 7.5kHz coil and pattern 1 with no changes, I am not into too much junk, the ground balance was a whopping 71, and sensitivity set at 25. Just the usual new guy stuff. Most were found at around 6"+ and sounded clean and good. Very little trash noticed at all here today, but I know the yard and it is littered with junk so that is why I choose to run pattern 1 with no changes. I found some other cool things but nothing like good old coins. One thing to keep in mind here..I have hunted this yard many times before. Did Ijust miss this or do we ever find it all? Love this machine!

This is truely more " turn on and go" detector than I have ever seen. Not a lot of controls or adjustments, and easy to understand as well. Some of the past detectors I had, had a lot of "bells and whistle" on them. I got out of hunting for a bit when I purchased one of them myself. I spent more money and it did less for me. I guess if you like to "tinker and tweak" your detector to death, it is great. But I personally got tired of all that work and no better performance. I have found a very small learning curve with the X-Terra. I pretty much turned it on and used auto ground balance, raised the sensitivity and started hunting. And you know what..it worked great. Yes, I do use 4 tones. Now life don't get any easier than that.

Sure, I could have maybe tweaked this machine a little too, but good to know it runs just great on it's own as well. And someday, after I learn a little more, I will return to this spot once again. But for the first time, learning was not painful. Kinda fun..happy hunting!

and summed it up in your last sentence. Learn what you can, apply what you learn and enjoy the hunt! HH Randy

Ed what did the shielded nickel come in at.I found one with the DFX once and it came in at 30 something,Im guessing around 12 .

The shield nickel jumped from 10-12 until I opened up the hole. Then it locked on at a constant 10. It was almost 6" inches deep, but the tone was so loud and clear. There was no dought something was there and I know there are no tabs in that yard. The only reason I was running pattern 1 was that the yard is littered with rifle shells. As kids, me and my brother shot a box of 22 shells every weekend there for years and that added up to all of junk. I can tell you that 30-06 shells lock on at a nice 28-30..lol.

I guess why it was so nice for me is that farm has been in our family for over 200 years, so I feel I really found a bit of my family past. I just learned this weekend of 2 other log houses that used to set on the property so maybe have to try the all metal mode and dig some history there as well. 200 acres is alot of ground to cover !

Good luck with hunting,go slow and dig everything with a good signal I be you didnt know that.Ha HA:detecting:
