My second fatty!

[attachment 337041 FattyDeerCreek10-19-16.jpg]Went digging at a site Keith and I have hunted to death! Don't find much there but when we do it's usually pretty cool! They finally got the beans harvested, so Tuesday I went down for a short hunt to unwind, Kind of a rough day. Fifteen feet into swinging right where we'd hunted several times, I dug a crusty 1920 wheatie, I thought ok, not bad. So I went farther out in the harvested bean field and hit a solid 39 with my Fisher F4. Almost passed it by, but at an old site i usually dig everything, could be a something gold. Depth was 2 inches, pinpointed it with my Garrett, Dug two inches, and out popped amother crusty penny! 39? I waved it over my coil again, yep 39? Could tell it was an Indian, but the 39 had me puzzled, usually 59. Put it away, and hunted for 10 minutes till dark, and went home. Took it out rinsed it off and realized I had my second fatty! Can't read the date it's so worn, but I thought I saw a 9 on it a couple times. So I'm calling it a possible 1859. My first one was a 63 fatty, but was in the same hole as an 1864, so didn't realize or think about the numbers being different for the nickel composition. I guess I won't be passing up many 39's again!

Definitely has a shield, so that rules out a 59, good catch Deep Down! Just looked at it again with my spectacles, and may look like 60? Every time I look at it, it looks like some thing different, really hard to tell. I didn't realize the 59's were different, Thanks Deep Down!

Ok, I think I see a Zero 0, does anyone else see it or is this my imagination?

No it's not, it's in the wrong place. Oh well.

Glad I could help. Now you may never here me say this twice but that may be a coin that the only chance of getting a date is with electricity you can get on a well known video web site and learn how to do. Most people use an old cell phone charger. I know I will get yelled at by some of you but it would look that by the shape of the coin it may be your only chance at getting a date. Your other choice is put in in the collection as is. Great find either way. HH Dave

Electricity???

It is a process called Electrolysis. I have used it on coins like that in the past to get a date with great results. You can find out how to do it on "--- Tube". Two things, Never use it on a coin that could have a high value or rarity. Neither of which would apply here and use caution as you are working with Electricity. It is and should be seen as a last resort effort to get a date. I am not advising you to do it just telling you what I have done on old coppers in the past with very good results in getting a readable date. Has been about 90% for me. HH Dave
