My Season Has Ended (temp -38 C).Thinking And Question On The Infinium ????

I am thinking of getting one to use on my fresh water beaches, both land and water. I am aware of the falsing issues, however I would like to hear the advantages of the hi-lo lo-hi sounds specifically towards hunting coins and jewellery. How's the depth? Weaker signals with deeper signals? Pinpointing? What coils work well with it?

Any information is greatly appreciated. Email me privately if you like.

Hi John, perhaps I should not be commenting on the Infinium, because I have never owned 1. Black Davy has 1 and likes it. Remember how much aggrevation the Mark II gave you in fresh water? Infinium should do the same, with holes about twice as deep. You ready? Don't go there for fresh water would be my advice. Good luck with your decision. PIs are best suited for deep salt water areas.

I hunted a freshwater lake with the Infinium for 2 years. I've posted before on this particular subject but will do a recap. First off all, I don't know where the falsing over holes bit came from, since it wasn't happening to me. Second, the depth was EXTREME, beating all the VLF's I had by a large margin (Sov., Excal., GTI 1500, T.Baron, MXT). Third, anyone who considers PI's to be strictly for saltwater should go tell the Minelab PI boys (hauling out all those nice nuggets) that they're using the wrong detectors. Fourth, in high mineralization and iron trash my trash/cash ratio was on par (or maybe slightly better) with excellent VLF detectors. Fifth, judging by all the deep silver I was pulling up (this area is hit by 10 or more MD'rs a day during the summer), it works well as a coin detector. It just requires using a bit more of the grey matter to be effective. ..Willy.

I have been using this machine now for about 9 months. I have spent most of my time with this unit, why because I LOVE IT. Is it the best unit for all areas defiantly not. I just purchased a Tesoro Tiger Shark for fresh water use.

My brother came in from Reno and we went out on Monday and hit the Harriman Reservoir in Vermont for a fresh water workout with the Infinium and the Tiger Shark. The first swimming hole was very clean no trash both units got the same amount of clad. This was a rocky area. The Infinium worked great. I was using the 5x10 DD but also like the 8"mono. The 8" is the best for water use but I do not have any issues keeping the 5x10 down. The Tiger Shark was using the stock 8" coil with the discriminate set at 3 to 3 1/2 to drop out some iron.
I do not use any discrimination on the Infinium and it does work. I was getting the clad on the Lo-Hi tones. some newer pennies are a Hi-Lo.

The next spot was a public swimming area and the Infinium was not the machine for this area. It was filled with old rusty nails(Lo-Hi) railroad spikes pull tabs screw tops and glass in almost every scoop.
I was driven nuts. I was digging 1 foot deep holes and still no closer to the target 5" spike at about 14". The Tiger Shark had its work cut out also but my brother did get some clad. A Excal would have been a better machine for this area.

I had worked a fresh water state park pond successfully for 3 small stud earing's a ring and a 14 silver chain necklace along with some clad and bobby pins baggie ties etc. The unit was great for finding the small stud earing's. My deepest was 5" with a strong signal. I was using the 5x10 again this day.

Now for the falsing issues. I had experienced this but it was my fault. I had the control housing hip mounted in front of me with the coil wire swinging. I was picking up the coil wire. I now mount it behind me. I also run the coil wire all the way to the end of the shaft at the arm cuff so no wire is swinging. Also get some cop boots with no metal. Anything with a bit of steel will be picked up as you walk. But the biggest problem that people have is the do not aggressively ground balance the machine in Lock first then fast and then slow. Now for the Black Davy tip of the day balancing the frequencies, this eliminates almost any falsing issues. After you ground balance as above go back to Lock make sure the threshold and discrimination were set a zero. Now turn the the threshold knob to the frequency adjust position, then go through the frequencies with the discrimination knob all the way to the right then back the left and set at zero again. Now turn the threshold knob back to zero and you hear the unit go dead nuts quiet. What you have done was run the unit through all 96 frequencies and made them stable. Even Garrett did not know this could be done when I sent a e-mail to them. This was done by others on the P2P forum with the same success. I have not gone deep except for trash. My favorite coils are the 5x10 DD and the 8" mono. I love it but it is not always the best fresh water machine because its a PI. It is a great beach and hot rock machine.

The Hi-Lo Lo-Hi allows you to cherry pick a little it is best to air test with some coins and jewelry to see what tones you get.

I have not spent much time using it on land so I really cant comment on it. The Iron check feature works advertised, but does not mean it is a good target.

I use to have a DetectorPro HH Diver but it could not get the small stuff or chains, so I went to the Tiger Shark.

The Infinium is really a personal preferance machine and definatly not for everyone. If you had the MarkII and did not like it for fresh water than you probably would not really want the Infinium.

Differant units for differant conditions. I am thinking about waterproofing my Minlab Quattro for the mega trashy areas.
