My Review of the CTX 3030 First 30 Days

All I can say is "what a month". I have pretty much been to about a half dozen sites since I got the 3030 and all of these sites have been hunted by me and countless other for the past 20+ years. Now I get out about 3-5 times a week so dont feel bad if your not finding the quantity that I am finding. I do get out a lot. I have an addiction I think. So lets talk about the finds...65 silver coins...1 half dollar, 3 Barber quarters, 5 Standing Lib Quarters 8 Wash quarters, 5 Barber Dimes, 18 Mercs, 16 Rosys, 9 war nickels. One large cent (1805), 11 indians, 117 wheats, 5 V-nickels, 8 Buffalos and tons and tons of clad. Also 3 silver rings, and several 1800-1850 buttons.

Now my brief review...this detector is worth more than the $2500 price tag. I am having so much fun detecting these days. The 3030 is super accurate on IDing coins and the depth is also right on. Target separation is in my opinion the single most important advantage of the CTX 3030. No matter what soil conditions you have, the CTX has a function for each of them. The main reason for my success is the ability to penetrate through tough soil conditions. Basically I hunt in clear screen but I do have my own pattern which works great on land. It has minimal discrimination but cancels out the strong iron signals. I will start an area in Manual 30 but lower the setting if it become too "chatty" I have seen remarkable depth improvements in manual vs Auto so I am sold on Manual. I will start an area in "high trash" and after several trips, switch to "ground coin" I find GC to be very sensitive and loves silver. The only drawback of GC is if you have lots of surface ferrous targets, you will get some nulling. My sweep speed is super slow so the nulling is minimal. "Deep-ON" is always turned on for me because I like hearing the deep targets. My audio is set to "Combine" mode but I bumped up the pitch on the CO42+ targets. ( I like hearing silver)

I recently started using the GPS feature and every time I go out I create a GEOHUNT. When I upload my geohunt to X2, I can really see what areas I missed that day. I will then make a note on my phone so the next time I go out to that same site, I know where I covered.

The CTX 3030 is really a fun machine to use. There have been lots of critics but I think many have not taken the time to learn the machine. Technique also makes a heck of an improvement of your finds. I am very methodical and overlap every one of my sweeps. I hunt by sound and look for the repeatable targets. FE-CO numbers are important, but sound is more important. I look forward to many years with the CTX unless of course Minelab comes out with another machine. I hope everyone enjoyed my review of the CTX 3030.

Very impressive Jim.

Great review. And congrats on a very successful "first 30 days". You've had a truly remarkable run. Although I enjoyed reading your entire post, one thing stuck out to me in particular........you said: "I am having so much fun detecting these days". I love hearing that! After all, enjoyment is what it is all about. I've gotten messages from guys who had lost much of their interest in the hobby over the past few years. Partly due to places being "hunted out". And in part due to not having "new stuff" to try. Those who have gotten to "know" their CTX 3030 will agree that this detector takes both those statements to task, proving them both wrong. Those sites aren't hunted out. And the additional functionality makes "mastering the circumstances" a do-able challenge. Your post is a testiment to both! Thanks for sharing. HH Randy

Wow congrats on the grat hunts I have a question about the coins you have just found.were they extremely deep say 8 to 12 inches or the normal dept that you normally find coins?I have an etrac and the only downfall to me is the weight of my machine but I am very interested in the new 3030.thank you for the great post

About 90% of the coins were in the 6-7" range. Only a few were around 8". Around here, coins dont sink deeper than 10" or so. When you get down to the 8-10" mark, there are lots of rocks. The density of the soil is high due to a larger clay component of the soil.

WOW what a haul congrats on all the great finds HH

Excellent Review.. thanks for sharing

Good review Jim......guess you should send me the link to all your geohunts so that I hit the spots you DIDNT because you sure know your CTX well and if it wasnt hunted out before.....it is now or until Minelab makes a new machine. LOL I have forgotten what my machine even looks like at this point, actually havent even seen my family in a week. ( I still remember what they look like, I think... lol) 70 hours of nitework in 5 days. Come tomorrow I hope to get out and do some detecting with ya. Let me know.......HH Joe

:clapping: Congratulation on them nice findings.

I have a question about the GeoHunt feature. If I create a Geohunt and put in some finds, is the GeoHunt still in the detector after I turn the machine off. In other words, can I create a Geohunt, turn the detector off, and when I get home connect the detector to my computer and load it into the Xchange2 program? Thanks pat

Hey Pat yes you can do that. When you end a hunt, connect the ctx to your computer and x2. Click on the ctx tab and drag the geohunts to the file folder so they can be saved.

Thanks. I will try it. It's too hot and dry here to hunt now, but I might walk around the yard and see what it looks like in Xchange2.

Congrats on the nice finds and on a great review!! Thanks, I have more learning to do.

In Liberty,

Jim
