My results of the Omega vs. the Gold Bug-coil to coil

Tested both machines using the 5 and 11 inch DD coils. Performed the tests using new batteries, over ground with no metal and ground balanced to that ground. The Gold Bug was run at 100 sensitivity in disc mode and the Omega was run at 60 sensitivity in disc mode also, one tone. The Omega was run at the 60 sensitivity because that's as high as I could run it smoothly. Both machines were set at 0 disc.

5 inch coil Omega Gold Bug 11 DD coil Omega Gold Bug
Penny 8 7.5 11.5 11
Nickel 8 8.5 11.5 11.5
Dime 7.5 7.25 10 10.5
Quarter 8.5 8.25 11.5 11
Copper button 8 8.75 10 11
Brass buckle 9.75 9 12 13
58 cal. round ball 7.75 8 10.5 11

I'm really happy with these numbers regarding the Gold Bug. Now I've got a Cabelas version ordered, and if it in fact gets 3" more depth on a dime, which I doubt it will, I'm gonna be upset with Fisher. If someone has a Gold Bug that gets 11" on a dime with the 5" inch coil, post a video. I for one won't believe it until I see it. Just sayin'.

Thank god something positive at last, thank you Shenandoah Digger these results seem quite impressive to me, i was really starting to worry about this detector

Your tests has restored my faith

Could you do me a favour please and air test the goldbug with the 11 coil with discrimination set at 40

Could you bury a dime at 8-9 inches and see if the machine will signal it with the 11 coil discrimination set at 40 ?

Thanks in advance

sensitivity in real world hunt? Might take the lead... there close right now?Omega is hard to beat for the money when equipped with the DD's...

Thats one thing i noticed about the Gold Bug SE was it was so quite at 100 gain it could of used more! I like a machine to become unstable at the top end and mine wouldn't ..Hate to think you're leaving some on the table so to speak...

Good report

When I typed these results in I had them spaced farther apart but when I entered them it put the numbers all close together. There are four different numbers going across for the different coils and detectors. Any questions just let me know. All this is real, no hype, and no 11-12 inches on a dime with a five inch coil, which of course is a load of crap.

I agree with Keith. I love that I can never run my Omega at 100 sensitivity. It's got something left. The Gold Bug runs at 100 with no problem. Maybe that's due to the frequency, but it could have been tweaked up quite a bit. I want that raw power,
like a Tejon.

Could you do me a favour please and air test the goldbug with the 11 coil with discrimination set at 40, this discrimination setting gives small iron a grunt signal

I'll air test the Gold Bug here in a few minutes with disc at 40 and post the results later.

Ok so here's my results with the Gold Bug at 100% sensitivity and 40 disc with the 11DD. I'm surprised to report that the results were even better than 0 disc tests. Ground was 49 to 51.

Penny--11.5
Nickel--12
Dime--11
Quarter--12
Button--12
Buckle--13
Round ball--12

I buried a clad dime at nine inches exactly, lying flat, and the detector would id it in the 80's and lower 90's. I lifted the coil almost two inches and it still id'd it properly, with an iron grunt every now and then. I don't work for Fisher, think Mike Scott can be defensive at times, and don't give a darn if the detector is good or poor, except for I just spent $499 on it. This is how MY Gold Bug performs, don't know about yours, and nothing here has a quarter of an inch added or subtracted from it. Take it for what it's worth.

Shenandoah Digger

Excellent results

How do you rate this detector compared to all the other detectors you have used?

It would seem it is as good as a T2 but a lot cheaper

Well I haven't used it enough to rate it, but the test results are pretty impressive. I think I may like it as much as my Omega over the long haul, and I much prefer the Omega over the T2. I think the Gold Bug will run quieter than the Omega, which is pretty quiet itself. I plan to use it for Civil War relic hunting, and for that I think and hope it will be great. I was skeptical about the new First Texas, but over the past few years they've put out some really good machines, and they're only getting better.
