My question on GB

New member
I think some might have misunderstood my question on GB,I 'm not frusterated with my 250 I'm very happy with it,in the last two weeks I have found 2 rings lots of change and lots of other very interesting things. The reason I was wanting to upgrade is that I have found so much with my 200 dollar investmant I could only imagine what I would find if I upgraded to a 1350,1500 or 2500.Buy the way,I am so happy with my garrett 250 that I am only looking at garrett MT.Thanks Jason

I own every detector that Garrett makes and I use the 250 most of the time. The only thing you gain with the other tectors is more features and a slight gain in depth. Depth is based mostly on coil size and even a cheapo tector with a big enough coil will go deep. Of course the 2500, Scorpion, or MH have all metal which gives you quite a bit more depth but you have to dig everything in all metal.. Depth is a fleeting term and based on a host of variables and a lot of hype. If you get the big coil for the 250 it will go as deep as anything else. You won't be missing much with the 250 and the large coil.

The 2500, MH, and Scorpion, are the only tectors with all metal. If you want a tector with all metal and want to dig everything including all the junk in the ground then any of those three would serve your purpose.. Ground balancing just cancells the mineralization in the ground and elimiates erratic response and target masking. If you enjoy digging tons of junk then you'll love all metal. Good luck.

I believe I will keep using this 250,just goes to show how much I know. Thanks for all the info ya'll just saved me about $800.

If you buy a general metal detector that costs 4 times more than the 250. You will not find 4 times more goodies with it in moderate soil.

Yeah it would have been a very expensive lesson. :) Learn that 250 well and it will reward you. Then if you feel the need to move up then do it. Many folks are constantly in search of the perfect detector that will do everything and work magic but there ain't no such animal. I've been doing this for 44 years, writing about it for 25 years or so, field testing detectors for 15 years, and I haven't found that magic detector yet. :) Good luck and we'll be looking forward to seeing pics of your finds

I was in your boat exactly a while back. I used a 250 for one summer and upgraded to a 2500 around October 1st. Dumb time to upgrade but I got 2 good months with my new 2500. At that time I had found around 650 bucks worth of loot with my 250.

There are differences between the 250 and the 2500. The 2500 seems to detect slightly deeper but in discriminate mode. Maybe an inch or two. The 2500 is much better at identifying a target but it still can't tell the difference between a gold ring and a pop top. Only an experienced user can do that and not with 100% accuracy either. Where the 2500 shines is with imaging. If you don't want to dig larger junk a 2500 can weed almost all of it out. The 2500 pinpoints a whole lot better than the 250 but with practice you will be able to pinpoint very accurately with your 250. The 2500 does have manual ground balance which I almost never use. Sometimes in True All Metal I use it. True All Metal is great for relic hunting and finds things deeper than I usually want to dig. I had two Ace 250s and sold one for almost what I paid for it. I had really babied it. I almost never use the one I kept as a backup but I sometimes loan it out.

The 2500 is an older design. It is around 12 years old. I have to believe Garret has something new planned. Maybe you should wait to see what the future holds. I bought my 2500 around 18 months ago and if Garrett had released something better right after I had laid out 1000 bucks I would not have been happy. If you are well off financially then buy a higher end machine now. I think the 2500 with the Propointer package is an amazing deal.

You seem to off to a very good start with your 250. Set a goal for yourself. Something like I will consider upgrading when........ (here are some suggestions)........I have found 1000 quarters.......I have found 50 silver coins......I have found 3 gold rings.......

Post photo of your finds we all like to look.

A manual ground balance can be very important is some types of soil. This is especially true if hunting for jewelry or gold nuggets. It mainly depends on what, how and where you want to hunt. I have both types of machines and sometimes a machine without a manual ground balance just does not work very well if at all. When taken the time to learn, the Scorpion is a great machine.
