My Quattro-MXT comparison....

Gila Marc

New member
After giving the Quattro several fairly good trials I've come to some conclusions (at my amateur level of expertise on the Quattro, these could change at any moment):

1. The MXT is faster recovery and easier ID on shallow coins and most jewelry, especially small items and chains.
2. Both are equally good, or bad, at separating signals in REALLY trashy places. Both using identical 5" Excelerator coils.
3. Quattro is noticably deeper, especially in "All Metal" mode.
4. Quattro in "All Metal" mode, and digging all signals -5 and higher, is a RELIC MAGNET! It roots out deep non-ferrous signals amazingly well, as long as I can maintain a s-l-o-o-o-w pace.

Conclusion: I will continue to use the MXT for tot-lot jewelry and modern shallow coins, and use the Quattro as my "heavy artillery" for the deep non-ferrous relics and older coins.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

Hi Marc, I use a Quattro myself and have the Platypus coil on it. It will definitely go deep and I would not want to be without it. Yes it is slow but I'm not real fast anyway. I also use the SE which is a really excellent detector, but I think they both have virtually the same depth capability. Ok Marc happy hunting and God Bless.

Hi Marc I have to agree with you . My backup machine is a White's Eagle Spectrum . It's much faster on recovery speed from target to target but can't come close to the extreem depth my Quattro gives me . I've also noticed that in real trashy areas the Quattro with the stock coil separates and identifies much better than my White's . This is how I find most of my good finds by sneaking into the trash from all angles and listening for that high tone squeek . Quattro in All Metal is the only way to go . Take care Marc and good luck to you ...Mike (aka Ratman)

That's some good info Wirecheif. Thanks for sharing that, because I, myself am always wondering if I shouldn't have bought the Explorer or the newer SE., but to hear that they both seem to get the same depth, thrills me to hear that. I'm still thinking the "main" feature of the Explorer and the SE, (not the only one), but the big "draw" for me on those two is the fact that they have two numeric readouts, to help you decide whether to dig or not, with a little more info to try and make that decision. Thanks for sharing that, and correct me if I'm out of line on any of this. Marc.
