MY PERSONAL BUFFALO + pictures

BOB VALDEZ

New member
I was always looking at those US-coins...

And I like that BUFFALO the most. Of course, I thought I would never see one...

Today, I was checking my coins and guess what ? :D :D

Take a real close look at the FIVE CENTS on the Reverse of the coin. I believe you have yourself a real treasure. It looks like FS017 out of the cherry pickers guide book. I believe it looks like a double die to me from the photo. If it is in that condition you are looking at a 150 -175 dollar coin. Great find.

Really ? Well, I am not going to sell it but it is always nice to have something special, grdavis.

I'll check it out to see if you are right !

What is a double die and on which side of the coin can I find this ? The side with the buffalo or the one with the Indian ?

I see nothing special...

Thanks for pointing me this double die out...

Look at the word FIVE CENTS on the back side of the coin. This is the side with the Buffalo. If you look closely, there appear to be two distinct sets of letter overtop of each other but shifted to one side. It should be most pronounced at the VE of FIVE and NTS of CENTS. This is caused early in the manufacture process by the hub. The hub is one of a few normal relief images that is pressed into a Die. The die is what is loaded into the press and strikes a coin. If the Hub shifts when it makes contact with the die, then you get a die that spits out errors. I believe the reference number is FS017 located in the "Cherrypickers Guide" by Bill Fivaz. At last count I think there are 50-100 discovered so far.

You really should not need a magnifying glass to see it, but it would make it really obvious if it is so. I really think it is just from the photo you submitted.

Additionally, go to EBAY, and look for 1935 and double die in the serch query bar. I have seen them for auction. You might have to look under completed items.
Hope it helps,
Glenn

Hello, Glenn !

Thank you for helping me out. I'll look again at that coin but now I know what I am looking for. The magnifying glass is here, somewhere, too.

You'll hear more about it, Glenn.

...except for fat letters. I can find evidence of a doubled die in the internet photo, but not in Bob V's. Must be my eyes. My 1935 Buffalo die certainly wasn't double hubbed.

3 1935 Buffalo nickels

you are looking at a standard buffalo nickel ..........dont be all jazzed up by coin experts on the fourms as there are many .......you cant possibilly make an accurate assment of a coin from a picture .......except I can see it aint no double die .........

Hello BobH !

I had a close look at that coin with my magnifying glass, but nothing seems to be the matter with it.

BOB VALDEZ, Belgium

But it IS a very nice coin, I LOVE it....

To all,

I did not say he HAS one, I simply said it "Looks Like". I have owned one or two before, and am familiar with this variety. O fcourse there is no way to be sure from a photo, and to Bob H, I do not see it on your shots. I have placed arrows at the places I am looking at. I simply see what look to me like shelf indentations at the places that this variety would show. Hope it helps..
