My opinion on the Omega so far

New member
First off, I have only been detecting for 2 years this month and have only used a Ace 250 for 6 months and a F4 for a year and 1/2. I have never used or seen a higher end machine.

To me this is a higher end machine. So far I do like the Omega. The audio is very different to what I am used to and it tells more by the way it hits on targets. I found my first Kennedy .50 Sunday and it hit a strong 91. Dimes were a 83, if 80 to 82 it was a pre 82 cent. It didn't take long before I was calling targets before I dug them. I have not found anything over 4" yet but am certain it is because of the place I was hunting. I was just trying to learn the numbers and sounds and don't have much time to hunt before it gets too hot here. The sound seems to be crisp on a coin sized target and more of a rise and fall on trash even tho it is the high sound. I dug some larger canslaw and saw that.

Sunday I used disc 21 and 3 tone because I thought it would be like the T2 and 21 was the "magic" number. I got sensitivity to 80 and got some crackling with the coil off the ground and when the detector was laid down to dig. When swinging it was stable. I did get some deeper signals but the heat was rising and I was in trees with roots. I found $2.82. 1 fifty cent, 4 quarters, 2 nickels, 10 dimes, and 22 pennies, one a wheat. I dug 2 zincs just to confirm they were zincs, all the rest of the pennies were copper. Disc at 21 killed the iron bass completely and it was like a 2 tone setting.

Today at lunch I went to the park in the middle of town here and was able to detect 30 minutes. Since reading NASA-Toms writing on the Omega I decided to try disc 16. I stuck with 3 tone and cranked sensitivity to 99. It was like listening to a giant bowl of Rice Krispies when the coil was in the air. When I swung it the crackling slowed down. The iron tone was still gone. I was getting hits all over but not knowing if it was falsing or real targets I didn't want to dig deep. Also it was in the middle of town and busy. I turned the sensitivity down to 80 and got 2 copper pennies and a dime at 3" I was getting some one way hits that would ID good one direction and trash the other at deeper depths. I think the DD coil will help in that.

So with my short time with the Omega I am happy. I also got my F4 back from First Texas today and will be able to make some comparisons on targets. I also plan to play with the tone options and see what works best for me. Now I need to find coins to get the DD for the Omega.

Please take this as what it is. Just my opinion so far. I am glad I got the Omega and when I learn it better I feel I will be able to find more than I could with my F4.

Durn this heat!

If your doing 4 5 inches and you know the area is about that depth you should do a lot deeper when you hit an at depth target..
Hope you keep us posted my friend..Omega sure is getting nice reviews..

I agree with Blacktoe. Most of my targets are at 4 inches or less but that could be the area. I have an issue with the dials turning too easily as I wind up moving them some how when I lay the detector down.

This machine pinpoints terrifically and it is so light weight that it doesn't even feel like you are swinging anything.

I had my settings yesterday with the sensitivity at about 60 and discrimination at 40. I dug enough pull rings and pieces of them that I finally notched out the pull tabs and foil as well.

I have to tell you though that a few of my zinc pennies came up as soda caps..... I thought that was odd. I agree with Blacktoe on the earlier pennies (pre82) ringing in as dimes in the low 80's. That is good because I know they are solid coins.

I did have some sort of twist tie that rang up as a quarter but to the machines defense, it was folded into a circle.

OH......and I have to tell you, I dug up this little piece of metal that looked like a cap to something that was about the size of a pencil erasure at about 4 inches deep. It rang in solid and took me forever to find because it was the color of the soil. I finally got it with my pinpointer.

Also with it on Autotune, I found a "hot rock". The Fe3 gage went up when I was over it. I left it there for practice in the future. :)

Of course first of all, how a detector ID's a target given variables like soil, masking, location of the target relative to the center of the coil, slight alloy variances, etc will never be a perfect science. On the zincs you mentioned, when you dig something like that in the future, you might want to pay close attention to the amount of oxidation on the coin and excavate it carefully in order to confirm if it's slanted or on edge. As mentioned earlier, clad dimes usually come in one number higher than a modern copper penny. However, I actually rely more on the excellent modulated audio to make that call. Once you pinpoint and note the reported depth of the either copper penny or dime target, you'll probably be able to notice that the dime will sound slightly smaller and or deeper than the depth it's supposedly at according to the display when compared to a pre-82 penny.

Hey Blacktoe,
I don't have a omega but I do have a F5 and I to was wandering about the depth it could get. I ran it in a wood chip play ground and got a quarter at 8 inches. I didn't think that was to bad but the next week was when the f5 showed it's self to be a deep seeking detector. The wood chips were only 2 inches deep at this spot I was hunting and when you dug you hit dirt right away. I was pulling dimes and pennies at 8 inches easy with a nice soft high tone out of the dirt. I'm sure a quarter would be detected a few inches deeper. I guess my point is that the Omega is a revised version of the F5 and from what I've seen anything that has been revised by Fisher / First Texas has been a good improvement over the detector before it. So you should have no problem getting those deeper coins. All deeper coins should come in with a nice softer tone not like a loud tone you'll get from a coin closer to the top of the soil. Keep us up to date on your finds!

Elton, Thank you for the encouragement.

lafatlife, It sounds like we will be learning this machine together.

Bill S, I was hunting a school built in the 70's and I doubt there is much there deeper. I have no doubt it will go deeper. In the park I detect there are probably deeper targets and a lot of ferrous trash. I don't want to dig a bunch of deep holes when it is busy in town. I have found 2 silvers there before. At this time I am still trying to learn the talk of the Omega. I got some deeper hits but think close iron was there too and didn't have enough confidence to dig. I plan to hit this park sometime early morning on a Sunday and try some of those signals.

BuckeyeBrad, Thank you for the tip. I will try to notice more when I dig.

Terry in Pa, I came real close to getting the F5. I really do like the interface. I guess the F5 and Omega are 1st cousins.

Thanks to all for your replys

Friday and Saturday says 103 degrees for the high. Argh!

You know I'm just teasing you a little..Hows the ground like concrete.....????????

Hi Elton,

Actually the ground is good as we are getting thunderstorms every couple of days. Not like the drought last year when I thought of finding some tnt to dig with. Last week a small tornado just missed the house but got the racetrack across the road. Twice this year we were barely missed. Either God is watching out for us or telling us to move.

No tornado but 60 plus winds and 1 inch of rain in 10 to 15 minutes. We lost power for 22 hours when a pecan branch took out our service to the house. It bent the metal pipe where the line connected to the house and Georgia power wouldn't reconnect till a electrician fixed it. Needless to say Thursday night and Friday was miserable with no fans or breeze. I thought our 2 dogs were going to have a heatstroke.
