...that may not be my best find of the day. Sorry no pics right now, my camera/computer connection is bad. I went to a local school after hearing a first-hand account of 2 gold nuggets being lost in the playground many years ago. I knew it was a long shot but it doesn't take much to get me excited to hunt. Upon arriving the playground was crowded so I started hunting the random open ground areas throughout the campus that I had not even noticed before. After about an hour hunt I had pulled 2 wheats, a 1950 D and 1958 D along with the usual clad. ( The 58' felt good after finding so many 59's ) Both came from about 1 to 1-1/2" down and both are in really good cond.
That's when I pulled my oldest nickel yet, a 1941 Jefferson in perfect (to my eye) condition. I swear it looks like there is even part of a fingerprint on the Monticello side ! It was a little difficult to sniff out the nickel signal among some trash but I was able to pull it from about 3-4".
This school broke ground in 1947 ( old for my area ) so this is exactly what I was hoping to find as far as dates. A littlle ways away I then found my most intriguing find. A really nice button. It's the same dia. as a penny and is silver toned, smooth except for 4 small stars in an arc across the face near the edge. Inside there is, what looks like, a piece of copper with a couple slots that looks like it had a loop or something that broke off in the center. I'm guessing military but I know NOTHING about buttons and the date is open to speculation. This was found 4" down in very hard-packed soil that produced a 60 yr old penny at 1-1/2 " so if you do the math it's possible it can date back quite a ways. One last thing about the location. I didn't realize it until I got home but the edge of the campus where I found the nickel and button borders right next to the main street in town, "Mission St", which has been used since at least the late 1700's ( when the Mission was built ). I am going back today to scour a long section that runs adjacent and parallel to the road. I was running the MXT with the D2 in relic / alternate mode, gain at pre-set to 10, disc just below 3, slight hum. Even though the D2 is a little harder to use in the trash, I still like it a lot and when I need to I can slow way down and separate very good with it. I will try to post some pics of the nickel and button when I get a new camera. Oh the gold nuggets ? Never did have a chance to look for those ( or the other two that were also dropped directly across the street ) but the sun's coming up and.....
