My old-timey Tesoro

Back like15 years ago when I was active in the MD forums, my kids always knew dad dug in the dirt. Like every day. They were little kids then. And I quit digging in the dirt for quite a long time, for various reasons. Now that they're teenagers, they want to do the same because they also like getting down in the dirt. And I just break out the old Tesoro Silver Sabre II, which is probably the best most-simplest metal detector you'll ever own that's total deadly on both little silver and little gold in my neck of the woods. It was the first detector I ever owned, bought new for the princely sum of $185 -- for a totally serious beginner detector -- like 20 years ago. It might not go real-big deep (and really, I don't need it to go deep for the kind of detecting I do even out in the woods), but it works real well around here. I also own a Fisher Coinstrike, which is a fine metered machine from back in the day too that goes deeper and does more than my Tesoro, but I gotta say -- my kid with my little 20-year-old tone-only Tesoro is probably going to find more stuff faster than me with my Cadillac. Simpler really is better, methinks. No ... meknows.

My little Silver Sabre II has been baked and frozen in a car trunk for weeks and months on end, neglected, abused and forgotten like crazy, but yet the little sumbitch keeps on ticking and giving like nobody's business. Tesoro makes some great gear that will stand up to some pretty horrible neglect and abuse. I've got a 20-year-old detector that proves it.

So there ya go. Buy a Tesoro and you'll *never* go wrong.

Thanks for sharing,

It reminds me of the old Timex commercials. They just keep on ticking!

well my first was a silver sabre 11--it did what it was supposed to do. i had it for over 20yrs. also. used it on and off for the past few yrs. then i decided to update to a new vaquero. figured i'd sell the ss11 so i put it on ebay--went quick for more $ than i ever imagined. got my new vaquero--it works great. the only negative--the threshold just plain sucks in comparison.

Dang! You got me to thinkin'. I'm gonna use my Royal Sabre next week. I know it's getting lonely in the back of my van.:sadwalk:

Slingshot, I still own my Royal Sabre that I bought new way back when and I cant seem to ever part with that Tesoro as well.Have a great season everyone.....Markmac

Enjoyed your story Scott as it speaks to Tesoros warranty as they never expected to see the Unit again! A quality build amortized over 20 years lets see that's $9.25 a year + batteries.
If you wanted to sell it could bring $150
Got to Love it....................... Tesoro.............Still a Happy customer after 20 years.

If anything, I'm totally amazed that none of the circuitry points have ever melted despite me forgetting the durn thing was buried in the back of my trunk when the daytime temps hit 100+ for days on end with the sun beating down, and then for extended lengths when the temps got down to around zero. The little SOB is like onehelluva punching bag, no problems whatsoever ever. I take better care of it these days, tho.

The Silver Sabre II is a fantastic machine and I absolutely love mine,an oldie but a definate goodie.HH
