im trying to find a site or sites on the internet that can help me in finding info on the house i live in.it was built sometime in the 1700s.it is my understanding that the house was built after the revelutionary war when george washington gave his top officials land along the mohawk valley .about 7 years ago i had a visit from a gentleman from the south with papers supporting these facts. when he left he promised to send me all the info he had . but he didnt. and i didnt write anything down. since at that time i wasnt into metal detecting.the property now is a cemetery which i am superintendent of.the land around the house is many acres that hasnt been developed yet for burials.it was a farm before this.there is only a house on the property now the barn was taking down and covered over.what i am wondering is would there be any outbuildings or root cellar and where would they be situated around a 300 year old house.any info will be apreciated .

they privy locations would vary depending on a few elements.
1. where are you located.
Big question here is how far would you want to run to the bathroom in the middle of the night? A privy up North may have been a little closer then a privy down south. Close enough to keep the smell away from the hous but close enough not to freeze your.. we lets just say not to freeeze. If you house was built in 1700s then its not privy but privies!! most were within 40 yds of the house. not near the well and downwind.

You can bet there was a root celler. deep cool and moist. those were the factos on where it would be. Root cellers if not filled in are easy to find. HUGE hole. If its filled in good luck finding it. Probing is the best way to find Privys. Hope that helps
