My Old Girlfriend Kissed Me Today

I shouldn't have been surprised...she's done it many times before. But we haven't been spending much "quality time" together lately. Not since I got my new "black beauty", the Explorer SE.

But today I decided to give the old CZ-70 a whirl. Probably because the weather called for rain and she's "rainproof". But partly because she was hanging there on the wall, next to the "hot young thing", looking all mature and golden. And she said "Grab ME...I can make you happy...I always have!" And so I did. And we headed out to the absolutely POUNDED farm field my buddy Karl and I have been hunting for the last several weeks. And as luck would have it, after only about an hour, the rain started. And I knew as the rainwater pooled up in the display of the CZ that the hunt would be ending soon. But not before getting that SOLID Hi-Coin signal...every bit of 8" deep and not waivering for a second...dink-dink-dink-dink...SOLID hits! So I dug it up, touched it with the Vibraprobe, moved a little dirt, and there it was...a very decent 1820 Large Cent!

I felt a little guilty for not taking my old girl out more often. She's still there for me when I need her most! And she always has been. :)

Nice LC Mike! I agree it's hard to beat a CZ. I have a Explorer and CZ-3D so I know what you're saying... :)

I know what the manual says but one one of those internal protection rubbers faulty or moved and one drop of water equals...a trip to Fisher and some downtime..Heck have seen them washed off with a hose after hunting salt water and leak in a light rain..Simple baggy would keep my mind at ease..I believe Fisher advises to use in light rain at best so do be careful....

Yeah, I hear ya. We pulled the plug before it rained very hard. It was just starting. In fact, stopped right after we quit. I won't normally hunt with it in the rain anyway, but I don't have to worry about running for cover with it if the rain comes. When they are properly sealed, the only place any water will get in is through the headphone hole and only then if the headphone plug isn't all the way in or if it was removed with water in the area.

Still, while the machine may be MOSTLY "rainprrof", I'm NOT! :)

As you know, I'm doing the GSBS in two weeks and I've always used my Fisher, but the interferance from other Fishers KILLS me and I end up shooting them the evil eye when they follow me around. It seems the interferance doesn't mess THEM up, but it sure does mess me up!

Which of the two detectors (which you know I also have) would you suggest for the competition hunt? I'm thinking Fisher. I've heard that the Tesoro Silver Max is a really good (and cheap) competition hunt machine, because it is light weight, but that it doesn't pinpoint well.

Any words of wisdom for my upcoming competition hunt?

Stacey

At a competition hunt you want to dig it all, right? The CZ with the 8" coil is lightweight. Discrimination and ID are meaningless then, so why bother? Use the CZ< put it in "Autotune" mode, and go to town. You should never need to put it in pinpoint, as in Autotune it will pretty much BE in pinpoint. Just practice with it a little like that, with a number of different targets...to see how it acts. Try it, I think you'll like it. If not, then use the Excal and put it in pinpoint mode vice Disc mode and have the same effect. Try both, see what you like best.

Yeah, Mike, I did that last year. Tom Dankowski told me that I would do better in Auto mode and I did that and found it to be MUCH easier to recover targets than what I had done the year before. Of course, on a typical beach hunt, things would be different, but with a competition hunt, auto mode is the way to go.

Guess I don't need to buy another detector. I'll just hope to WIN one!

will be trying it out in a day or so. I think buying the cz70pro back in October...about 1 month before I bought my new SE...was the best investment I've ever made on a detector. I got it NIB with a lifetime warranty for $581 delivered. I'm hoping that the sunray 12" coil will give her the extra horsepower to grab an inch or so more depth.

My friend Darren has the FZ-12 and he likes it a lot. I saw it and it's a really nice coil. I always loved my old S-12 for my Sovereign Elite when I had it. And I will say that they DO get a LITTLE extra depth but not more than an inch or so at best. The biggest thing with bigger coils is coverage, as I'm sure you realize.

Yeah, the CZ-70 in my opinion is an all-time classic. One of the best machines ever made. I'll never get rid of mine.

12.5 sunray is an excellent unit for coverage and don't be surprised if you gain several inches in depth. Certainly not for every area but large fields or beaches it excells...

since it's going to be in my stable for life...I might as well add the Sunray FZ1 probe to it. Man does it look sweet! It goes on every hunt with me and it's just a toss up between it and the SE. I believe it goes just as deep and even deeper in many cases as the SE. I don't believe it does as well in the iron..but if I'm getting good depth...I don't mind chasing a little iron every now and then and popping out a barber dime in the same hole with an old rusty nail sometimes.
