My old artritic self is going to swing the 10.5 coil tomorrow.

I'm going relic hunting around a CW campsite, and I haven't taken the big coil out YET. I've had it for months. I swung it in the yard as I was taking it out to the truck tonight, and I have a feeling this thing is gonna whoop me tomorrow, so I'm taking the stock coil with me for relief. Can't wait to see if the extra weight is gonna be worth the extra inch or so of depth. Probably not, but I'll report back in here tomorrow night. :)

Dirt Poor, order a Doc Swingy Thingy, strap it on, and swing that 10.5 DD with comfort. My pard and I have been swinging with the Swingy Thingy on or X-70 and X-705 for the past year and you can not tell the difference from a standard coil. TomB

A little trick someone clued me into, is tucking your sheathed digging knife (Lesche or whatever) under the armstrap to add counterbalancing weight. It actually works. Its the balance that's the problem, not really the weight.

Counterbalance AND, shorten the rod on your detector by one notch. This keeps you swinging at your feet mostly, but you'll wear out pretty fast if you overextend. For me it's also critical to have the armrest placed just right, AND SNUG. I had therapy on my 'tectin arm for tennis elbow/repetetive stress injuries due to massive amounts of data entry for years, and keeping that armband tight right across the upper forearm means I'm swinging longer and hurting less!

Thank y'all for the helpful replies! Well, I'm happy to say that the big coil DOES perform well and it DOES go alot deeper and hits more "solid" on those semi-deep targets. I didn't find anything earth-shattering, BUT I dug 6 or 7 deep shotgun shell brasses that MANY other machines had missed. I also went by an old homesite where I had thoroughly hunted a narrow strip by a treeline with my stock coil. The 10.5 hit solid on several brass items that the 9" coil never beeped-on. One was an old brass thimble, another was a CW camp parasol brass grommet, and a couple other old brass whatchamacallits. I KNOW how well I had hunted this piece of land before, and I hunt slow. So I can say with confidence that the big coil really works. I swung it for a total of 4 hours at 3 different locations. And I'm not too sore tonight(yet).

Thanks for the good report Dirt Poor. I can't wait to use my round 10.5" HF DD when the ground thaws. Besides using the Swingy Thingy(bungee cord) to take the weight off as TomB said(which I also have one). Other things that can be done to help is to make the balance better by putting a round 10.5" DD coil on backwards and/or the s-shaped middle shaft on backwards(experiment). As Canewrap said, "Its the balance that's the problem, not really the weight." And with the advice from Pyledriver.

Also using an X-Terra upper straight-shaft(rod) can help make the balance better. Plugger makes an metallic Aluminum one and Anderson Detector Shafts makes a non-metallic Carbon Fiber one on special order. Using a non-metallic upper shaft may also improve the coil-machines sensitivity by going to Carbon Fiber. I have a Otto Fiberglass(non-metallic) upper straight-shaft for my GP-3000 which also fits on my Musky(Musketeer Advantage). Anderson also makes a Carbon Fiber upper straight-shaft for the Minelab SD/GP(X), Musky, Sovereign, and Eureka Gold machines.

Good report DP!! I am glad you found the coil to your liking! Now you are ready to roll, Beale.

which 10.5 are you using
