MY NEW VAQUERO IS HERE !

The big brown truck just made an appearance and left me my new Vaquero! Like a kid at Christmas, I unwrapped my present and quickly assembled my new beeper and waived a few coins under the coil to see how it would respond.
Nice solid hits on all targets and at very good distances from the coil. Now for the fun part, taking it out for its first hunt.....an old picnic grounds that I have hunted hard over several years. Coins are getting scarce there and if the Vaquero
finds anything there, it will prove that it is a worthwhile addition to my arsenal. I did notice the Vaquero hit much harder on nickels than the other coins. Is this because it runs at 14 khz ? It stands to reason if it hit that hard on nickels it will hit hard on gold too.....exactly why I wanted the Vaquero.
I will let you guys know later on how the Vaquero did at the picnic grounds.....happy hunting.......

Congrats on your new Vaquero ! Yes the Vaquero loves nickels. Sunday when I went out I detected an old school yard, that I have been hitting heavy for the last ten years. I picked up 7 nickles and a junk girls ring, and assorted clad:tesoro:

Happy Happy Happy

I'm jealous!! Mine is still on layaway...1/2 paid for. I hope next month it will be heading my way.

Congrats on getting yours. I'm eagerly awaiting pics.

Well guys, I spent a couple hours or so at the old picnic grounds this afternoon with the new Vaquero. This site has been hunted pretty hard since we located it in 1986 and has produced lots of old coins over the years, but it seems to be harder to find much these days. My hunting buddy reminded me of one day there that between the two of us, we found 15 silver coins that day. Today, the Vaquero pulled a 1930 canadian penny from about 6 inches and a 1920 buffalo nickel from close to 8 inches. What impressed me the most was in the hole with the nickel was the rusty wire shown in the picture.
It gave a little funky signal with the nickel, but still hit hard. I was running the Vaquero just above iron and supertuned and it still ran smooth as silk over the old square nails and trash. I dug an old shotgun brass and a .22 casing but those are pretty common in this grove probably from squirrel hunters
hunting the big oak trees.

My initial thoughts on the Vaquero are it is an excellent machine that can hit deep targets easily. Ground balancing the detector was a breeze and it is a joy to swing like all other Tesoro detectors. It found the 2 coins where I have been skunked the last couple of trips there with my CZ5. Granted, the grove is huge and I could have just not got my coil over the coins with the CZ5, but the Tesoro did find them today. I will feel more comfortable with the Vaquero after a couple of more hunts, but it is easy to pick up and start finding coins with. Anyone looking for a good detector with very good depth and light as a feather to swing for hours won't go wrong looking at the Vaquero. I see many good finds coming in the future with mine.........

Nice looking finds joe dirt_1, may this be just the start of a great collection.

Hardrockminer, thanks, I think the Vaquero is going to fill my finds pouch quite often with good finds. The way it hammers nickels really impresses me, and we all know lots of gold rings are found in the nickel range.
I'm researching a grove that was used in 1870 for an old settlers reunion that was attended by over 600 people and they had a picnic lunch under the trees. I wonder what they dropped?? You can bet me and the Vaquero are gonna find out sometime soon....lol.

Hey Joe

Nice stuff and I knew you were going to come back with a story and some goodies...Gratz!

Now a tip

Yes you can swing the thing pretty fast and still find a good bit and honestly it's hard not to swing fast
because of the weight. SLOW IT DOWN a bit and you'll really start nailing the deeper stuff.
Just like you found with the clipped sounding nickle and trash...The deeper items wont always
hit good in all directions. I got a 1899 Barber half that was pretty much standing on edge
at 11" about a month ago. If I wouldn't have trusted my gut on that one it would still be
eating dirt.

Seems you're running the Disc right but make sure after you GB it
you also Power Balance it. Hold the Pinpoint down and fine tune the GB again till there is no change.
OR some at this point like to run a little neg..some a little pos...Up to you. Then to finish Super Tuning it
once all that is done...Turn the Threshold to about 2-3 oclock. Yes this screws up the Pinpoint
feature but you will get alot more depth. You do have a Propointer right?

Gary, thanks alot for the tips! I have read Monte's posts about power balancing but it never even crossed my mind today. I guess the excitement of a new detector was just too much for me....lol.
I never needed the pinpoint button on the Vaquero, and every target was dead center of the coil. They are just so easy to pinpoint with by Xing the target. And yes, I have a propointer. It would be hard to hunt without it now... a real time saver when you have those tiny targets you just cant find.
Thanks again for reminding me of power balancing my detector.... I will definitely do that next trip. HH......

Hey Rog

Not a problem....I know what you mean about being excited over a new detector. I'll be adding a second Vaquero to the stable here in about a week. (My woman took mine from me to use) .. lol
I'm also thinking of adding a water machine as well but that's another story for another thread.

With the X'n being so accurate if they could just add 2 tones ( Iron and other stuff) and a depth reading the Vaquero would be perfect.

Ah well...can't wait to see and hear more from ya.

G

Gary, I was just thinking the same thing...... 3 tones on the Vaquero would be great....not so sure a depth reading would be needed though.
It's good your woman is into detecting....easier to get new toys when she likes it too...lol.
I'm going to try to get a hunt in tomorrow, so keep an eye out for updates here. I might have a few more goodies to post. HH and thanks again for the tips!
