My New Toy/Newbie To Metal Detecting

I am new to the hobby of treasure seeking as well as this forum. I have been wanting a metal detector for quite some time and found one at a yard sale today, a Garrett Treasure Seeker (very vintage one to boot) for $25. I looked up similar models and they sell for much more than this and think I got a good deal.

I took it out in the yard and so far haven't found anything significant...a few pop tabs, a penny, a blade from a broken knife, and a few rusty nails.

My questions are as follows: how do I adjust it to get it to tell the difference between something valuable from something not valuable? I played around with it, and still can't get the adjustments quite right.

I tried to upload a photo of it but had a hard time getting it to upload. So will describe it. It is green, with white coils. It has three knobs on the left side of the battery/control box. The first one is for the meter. It seems to turn on the unit. The middle one, red, is for volume. It seems to turn on the unit too. The third one is for metal or mineral. It's pretty noisy but makes a funky noise when it comes into contact with metal. I have had the tuning knob everywhere and still not sure how to work it the best way.

It runs on two different 9 V batteries. I am assuming I can switch from one to the other, as it has a toggle switch for it.
There's also a toggle to switch from small to large coils.

The panel on the right side of the unit says TR on one side and there's a BF in a circle on the right of the panel. Says I have a Garrett Master Hunter.

So if someone can give me a rundown of the best adjustments to try, I would be appreciative.

I have always wanted to try this hobby not only for exercise but the fun of finding something cool. I want to make a note of other users' favorite settings and what they mean if I have found something. Also what's the depth range of this particular metal detector?

I don't want to shell out hundreds or thousands of dollars for a brand spanking new one just yet...want to try my hand at this before I move on up to a more expensive model....

Metal detecting success comes from digging a lot of junk and LUCK! No matter what detector you are using. There are detectors with features to limit out some junk but at risk of missing something good also. This is a hobby for those with patience and time. Best advise on that unit is find the manual and read up on it.

Keep digging that junk and eventually you'll find something that just might get you hooked!

Welcome to the addiction! After your first good find, you will be hooked for life.
Happy hunting!
