My new Sovereign Rod with the Patriot Meter

plugger

New member
I just received my new Patriot meter with the newly designed handle mount. It was designed for the new GT model, but, as you can see, it will fit any 7/8" handle or stock Minelab rod, if you relocate the bracket to the bottom mounting position. The Gt & the Patriot meter is the best Sovereign setup yet. I have the older XS model, the Elite & the GT and my favorite setup is the GT, which I hip mount and here is a picture of my custom rod with the new meter and the second picture is a closeup of the new bracket.

That looks great!
Must be easier on the arm too, I know after a few hours with my SovXS I am sore.

Plugger, nice job, I have mine mounted on my GT pole in the same manner. You are right this is the best mounting system for those of us with any Sovereign, not mention how well the meter works. I find it particularly useful in trashy areas containing a lot of screw caps, it ID

I just ordered in one of the new Patriot meters to see if it is better than what I have been using. I plan or posting what I think on this meter, both the good and bad as everything has a good and bad.
I just seen too many favorable post on it to ignore anymore. Hope to see it next week.

Hi Rick, this is Bill Quinn, I bought my GT from you. Remember, you threw in a DTI 2 meter? I sold that to my hunting buddy, who turned around and traded it when he bought his Gt from David at Dixie. He will be getting his Patriot this Saturday. I love my Patriot. It's so stable and boy it is dead on.
But, you have more experience (by far) than I do in the field with the Sovereigns, and, I am looking forward to reading what you have to say. I always enjoy your posts. HH,

I hope the GT has been good to you and been finding some nice stuff with it. I have been when i can get out and not going back to the same places all the time. I just dont seem to get away very much as I only have a hour or 2,but been seeing some things my other Sovereign and the Explorer has missed. I also see a little more iron with the GT that is fooling me, but then again I like to dig some of the iffy ones just to see.
I should have the new Patriot meter here next week, so I will see what it can do for me the SunRay cant, that is if it can. I do like the auto calibration and wondering how well it will stay calibrated when it get hot out. I am also curious on how well it will see the deep ones and ID them correctly.
I will be posting after I get it and use it for a while and may even see if there is a way to have both meters on to compare them after I used the Patriot for a while.

Rick, I dug 143 good targets today and about 70 trash targets, just to verify the reading on my Patriot meter and to make sure they were not rings. I found 2 Sac dollars, 50 quarters, 32 dimes, 5 nickles, 48 zincs. 1 1942d wheatie, 4 tokens and 1 key. I have to say I am impressed with the meter because about 8 of those quarters and dimes sounded like trash and some of them were down in the hardpan, under the sand around the concession stand. The meter said coins/silver and the tones said junk. Every time the meter was right! I and everybody else that hunts this beach had ignored these targets because they sounded crappy and we didn't want to dig 8" inches into the hardpan. Luckily, I carry a 9" bladed knife (I hang my sand scoop on it) and it wasn't that difficult to get these out. There are even more there, at greater depths, that I didn't bother to dig (I was tired), maybe next time. Some of the targets were so tiny, they kept falling thru my scoop and I had to eyeball them because I don't carry my pinpointer at the beach. $18.44 today! Tomorrow, I'll be up again at 1/4 to 5 and on my way to the beach! Sunday, I will rest. And, then give it hell again on Monday and Tuesday! I'll keep you posted. I can feel some gold coming soon!

Rick, with the knowledge you have of the Sovereigns, you will not be disappointed with the Patriot meter. I have read most of your posts and can see you are no beginner, you have offered up many a great tip for the rest of the Sovereign users. I have been using the Sovereign since 1991, with meters and without them. The Patriot meter is in my opinion the best, it will work with and mount on any model, and this is a plus for those (like me) that have different Sovereign models. Two of the best things I like about my Patriot meter are its ability to ID screw caps and the Iron circuit. Plain and simple, screw caps ID as screw caps, unless they are really flattened, and when the Iron circuit light comes on, its iron!!! I have put mine through the paces and have no regrets in my purchase. Yes, this meter may cost more, but this will quite possibly be the last meter you'll ever buy for the Sovereign model line-up. I would not trade mine for anything else!

If you have been using a Sovereign since 1991 I am sure you know your Sovereign well and no beginner as this is where I feel the Patriot will work the best for. I just got a E Mail and my meter is going out on Tuesday by Priority mail so I should have it by the weekend and I will be able to see what it can do.

Thanks for the info as it make me feel better about the purchase already.

Nice setup. You mentioned a custom rod. Did you buy or make?

My only change would be the arm restraint. I broke one on my Excalibur. I believe it was due to the force it was under while moving the coil thru shallow water. I ended up getting the metal arm restraint that they are showing with the Elite and it works great. It also has a strap which helps keep the shaft on the arm when a wave hits you.

I make these myself. I use the plastic arm cuff because they want an arm and a leg for the metal ones. You should know what they cost. I would probably use a metal one (I have a couple) if I was doing a lot of water hunting, but, because I only do shallow (low surf) water hunting and I sweep so slowly, I have never had a problem. But, I do mostly dry sand and some parks and I have never broken a plastic arm cuff. For good reason, I hip mount and my rods have perfect balance. There isn't a whole lot of pressure against my arm cuff or my wrist. I think proper balance is the key for land hunters.

Very nice job on the rod. If you would not mind, could you post or e-mail me some instructions?

As far as the cuff goes, I do not know how much they cost. Mine broke when the detector was still under warrenty. I have been talking to the people in Vegas and they sent me the metal one as a replacement. My Excalibur has been in the shop twice in two years but I have to say, the shop has been great about getting things fixed and getting the detector back to me.

I do not do much deep water detecting either. Does your rod do a good job at keeping the coil at the same angle? The stock on on the Excalibur does not seem too. Not long into a water hunt, the waves manage to loosen it up and the coil goes weird on me.

Must be me with breaking arm cuffs as I had the same thing happen to me using my old Garret CX.
