My new GT already has to be shipped back to MINELAB

Just got my DIGIMETER last night. Calibrated it, was working fine. I get home from work, grab my GT, got out to my site to hunt, turned it on and it wouldnt stop chattering, sounded like a geiger counter. Numbers were going up and down on the meter, I tried everything, lowered the sensitivity, disconnected the meter. Just had to go back home, and it was still doing it. I had sand in the coil cover from the beach last week, washed it up real good. Same thing. Tried putting my 7 inch coil on, no difference. The battery has a full charge. Called Minelab, described the problem, they basically said I probably need to send it back to them in Vegas. I think this not only sucks because I havent even had this 2 weeks , but also I have to shell out more money for insurance and shipping, and who knows how long till I get it back. Looks like I am back to my 1265X. Sorry to complain, I just need to vent.

Hey,,,thanks, I feel a whole lot better now...

I have the same problem when the battery is getting low, I can charge it up and no problem. The first time it did it I thought it was the meter causing the problem because if I disconnected the meter or the S-1 probe it worked OK. I think it has something to do with the extra power drain of the meter and the probe. Anyway when I have a fully charged battery pack every thing works great - can hunt for several hours without a problem.

I had charged it less than a week ago, and have only used it for maybe 3 hours tops. But, I will give it a try anyway, could be a bad battery. Thanks.

Also just for the heck of it try charging the batteries though I doubt that is the problem. Still when the nimh battery packs are new they have a very short run time maybe 3-4 hours the first couple of charges then they reach thier normal 15-20 hour run time. Normally low batteries cause the Sov to make a single loud beep every 30 seconds or so. Hope something here helps!

If this is a new one the battery for the first charge or 2 wont last as long as it will after it has been charge a time or 2. I like to use my Sun Ray super charger and charge and discharge the battery a couple of time before I use it the first time as the Nickle hydrides have to be woke up it is call in order to hold a full charge. This is done by discharging and charging a couple of times.
What it sound like is a low battery alert you are getting, so after you have it charge again and if your charger is working right I have a feeling the detector will work fine. Charging should take 12-14 hours I believe it is. This is also why 8 of the rechargeable will not work in the alkaline pack as it need 10 cells which the factory pack has in it.

Thats the first thing I did was disconnect the meter, no change. I had put the batterie back on the charger last night, I'll let it charge for at least 12 hours. Thanks, Aaron

Last week my battery went the first time, but when it went, it made a long hi-pitch sound that kept getting louder. Just like it says in the manuel. But this time, it is totally different the sounds are going up and down, the numbers on the meter are going crazy too. I dont have a probe on it yet. Thanks

I charged it when I first got it, then charged it again last week, both times for at least 14 hrs. But I have only used it a couple of hours since I charged it last time. Robert and Bob at MINELAB told me they think something is wrong within the box. They are Priority Mailing me a return tag, atleast I wont have to pay shipping and insurance. Hopefully charging it again will resolve the problem. Thanks, Aaron

when i read this post it scared me cause i just installed a new meter and s-1 probe but after taking it outside i found that everything worked fine. only thing i did fined was sunray had the probe pluged into the wrong socket on the box. when i switched to coil the probe was on and when i switched to probe the coil was on. all i had to do was switch the sockets. but everything is working good so i think you have problems somewhere else. i dont think its batteries.
