my neighbor has got a REAL BIG MESS....

...He has been buying cigarettes out-of-state for the past 2-3 years-hes a HEAVY smoker...I told him last year I read a story in the paper about a woman here in Michigan that got a bill from the State for almost$4,000.00-Seems she was buying them out of state to avoid paying the $2.00 a pack tax on them...:yikes:My neighbor told me"Its all under control-THIS is legit"....WELL-FAST FORWARD TO THIS LAST MONDAY....My neighbor got a letter from the state of Michigan that in 2005,he bought something like 65 cartons,this year already 30 some-ALL OUT OF STATE-And,a bill for almost$2,000.00 on all those smokes bought out of state-:ranting::rant:WHEW!!TALK ABOUT HAVIN A BAD HAIR DAY!!!He said hes fightin it all the way to the Supreme Court,if need be-Hes blamin everybody and everything else,when HE is the victim of his own bad habits...No;I didnt tell him that-He said hes gonna plead hardship because he is retired and disabled...I dont think its gonna matter much;though...:unsure:

are cracking down on internet businesses who don't collect state tax for shipment into their state. They are taking alot of these companies to court to get them to start collecting the taxes and looking for lists of people for back purchases. That's one way I can think of that people are getting billed by the state -- don't know if this is the case with this story.

...I think a big part of it is Internet purchases-But,in this case;my neighbor doesnt have Internet-They can track you down with a credit card number or check-In his case,I believe it was a cancelled check...:(:rant::ranting:
