My modded Cibola

Monsoon days here in Italy, so I decided to make some bricolage with my new entry, a second hand Cibola.
To tell the truth, when I opened the parcel I remained a bit disappointed discovering that it was an unboxed one...this is the first time that I'm unhappy to make a good deal!
Let's start saying that this was the first time with a solder, the last experience with electricity was a shortcircuit that damaged my childish room (I was repairing a plug...).
So when I started cutting GB trimmer on mobo I told her: "Forgive me, 'cause I donno what I'm doing".
Step by step I discovered that soldering is not so though, no cold solderings or problems at all. A very clean job.
The only problem i got was to find a plastic washer to fill the pinpoint hole that is larger that GB shaft (without it knob was loose), so after some trials I got a well dimensioned o' ring and everything became rock soild.
Another o' ring under knob against unwanted rotation and that's all. Knob looks big, but it has same size of the Tejon one. It is Mouser Electronics part # 8658 by Keystone (little ones are 8567).
Here is link: http://www.keyelco.com/pdfs/p57.pdf for everyone that want replace damaged knobs.

I placed trigger to get center/all metal and forward/discr. So I can hunt in all metal and confirm with trigger (the Tejon way).

I did some air tests and got confirmed that it has same depth as my Vaquero, but with a smoother threshold. When supertuned it is in photo finish with my Tejon.

I wanna say thanx to Sven for his precious advices.

Here are some shots:

Great job,

Maybe you want to trim the size of the axel from the potentiometer so the knob will be closer to the control housing.

I removed the O-ring last week because, for me, it was much easier to turn without (thumbing).

I'm also very pleased with the results of this mod!

Thank You for reply, OSD.
Try to make shaft shorter could be ask too much to my lucky star.
Btw, I feel comfortable with its lenght. My knob is not so hard to turn with thumb even with the o ring on. I noted that if you change pressure of knob on o ring before setting the nut You can make it more or less though to turn.
Hi Sven and thank You.
Take r,

Those can be purchased at Radio Shack.

They also are on tha metal ends of several

things like metal wire sink strainers.

They are on tha ends of camping forks.

I use tha camping forks to make wood

chip stand up diggers I call tha Arkie

Barkie.

Happy Huntin,

Tabdog

:clapping: I guess that the Cibola is a lot like the Vaquero after the mod. You say that it is smoother. I did not think there could be a smoother machine than a V. Congratulations on the mod. Have you ever tried a Inca, That is a old machine that I have, that I really like to this day, Of course that may be because it was also the first model of Tesoro that I owned. Bill in Texas :tesoro:

I was glad to hear about the Inca. I believe back in the 80's a fellow by the name of Ken Whitener found out that some Tesoro's could be run in a low disc setting (about 2 or something, as I remember) and recheck a signal in the a/m mode (motion) and if the signal got softer, it was a dig situation (coin). If it got louder, it was in the tab area, and if it stayed the same, it was usually a nickle. He had tremendous success during a time when notch wasn't known yet. Now I can't remember if it was the Inca or the Mayan that he used. Later on, they found the White's coinmaster 3000 and some others would do the same. And as for the Cibola, isn't there a pot that you could power ground balance aka Monte's article at the harshest site in your area-I've done it with my Silver umax and was just wondering.

That's what this Cibola mod thread is all about. Replacing the Ground Balance trimmer pot on the pc board with an external adjustable pot. The trimmer pot on the board is way too touchy to adjust right on without a scope.

That method of ID'ing targets was reverse discrimination and I did that a lot in the early years. It works very well with a TR unit that has a re-tune button in the discrimination mode. Your friends machine was the Mayan I think, I had one of those also. The Inca was one of the first slow sweep motion machines. I still like the Inca as well as any Tesoro, but it is a little heavy so I use the Vaquero most of the time. Bill in Texas
