I figured I'd had enough sitting around thinking about my dog. Mornings seem to be the worst for that, so I headed over to that lot around the corner even though I knew I couldn't hunt for more than about a half hour or so. This time I hit another patch of grass that my friend with his flagship machine said he gridded both ways and did a pretty intense job of gridding that section, where as the section where I found the SLQ he said he gridded but not as intensely.
A tougher test this time of the GT, as he worked this patch from two 90 degree angles and dug even marginal coin signals, but didn't dig all the good signals above iron hoping for a gold ring or something. Far as I think he told me he only dug some of the "good" signals lower than a coin, such as good nickle hits. Good for me, as I've had my best luck finding rings in yards, as most people aren't in the habit of throwing pull tabs and other junk on their lawn, so the trash to treasure ratio for rings is usually pretty good in yards.
So anyway, nothing major, but still good for a half hour hunt because it shows that section holds promise. I got a nickle as well as a wheat. The wheat was 4 or 5" deep and not a very good signal from one direction, but it gave me enough high tone to investigate further by swinging at it from another direction where it cleaned up and gave a perfect ID and audio. I think there was iron in the hole but I didn't check. It might have been on edge but I doubt it, because on edge coins usually give me a very distinctive up/down or high/low back and fourth tone as I wiggle over them, and then will give a good coin signal from one spot as you move around them. This one had more of a sick/slightly nulling tone from the bad direction I first hit when I came across it, but there was enough of a "hint" there of a high tone to work around it and find where it cleaned up. Score one victory for the Sovereign at an intensely worked/gridded spot from two directions by a flagship machine being used by a very good hunter. Best hunter I know personally, in fact. I look forward to gridding out the rest of that section of grass to see what else he missed.
And since I dug several round and square tabs as well in this short hunt, I know there is much more to be found in that respect as well, meaning...a possible gold ring, gold coin (hey, one can dream because the house was old enough), an old odd coin that reads lower on the scale, as well as who knows what other interesting old relics, tokens, or other good finds.
That's one thing about the Sovereign's long drawn out analog-like audio. It will catch your attention in certain situations where my machines that had more of a digital or short processed audio would not do a very good job of tipping you off to a possibly good target that at first isn't giving much of a report at all because you just nicked the edge of it or it is trying to break through some kind of masking or being on edge. The sticking/changing threshold that holds the previous tone also helps with this, but I give more credit to the Sovereign's long report for dragging a possible target in front of your eyes and saying "look at what I just found for you. You better center over and wiggle on this one." In terms of all the machines I've owned, it will get my attention more on possible targets that at first are hardly hit being at the edge of the coil or don't sound good at all until you get over them and wiggle. More of like it flagging you down with a huge red flag instead of using a little white hankie to try to get your attention.
That's one of my favorite things about this machine. Even if you just nicked the edge of a target with a coil, or even if it's masked pretty bad from that angle or on edge, it will give me a much more long or "robust" sound off to grab my attention and tell me "don't miss checking this one out."
I have to make a follow up call about a job interview I had in a little bit here, surf the net a bit more, and then I think I'll force myself to go back and grid that section some more. Beats sitting at home catching myself wondering where my dog is in the house or backyard. My mind keeps playing tricks on me like that.
