My Minelab Explorer XS found every one of these for me...

Some of them were 16" plus. All were fairly deep. All were near lots of iron. I can't say enough about how good I think Minelab machines are! BTW these were dug over a period of 10 years.

What are the round items?

I believe the round ones are breastplates and the smaller round one with the square piece attached looks to be a two piece navy buckle. Awesome finds.

The small round thing is the tongue from
a 1850's U.S. Militia tongue and wreath buckle.
Some of the U.S. plates are belt buckles and some are cartridge box plates.
They are all lead backed and quite heavy which may explain why they were in the ground instead going home with the soldier.

What do they ring up on the Explorer? I think I read somewhere it also depends which side is up?

That might be true. I just remember the last couple being in the indian head penny range. I think some of them read higher like a penny/dime reading.
