This is one hot 1998 SS, one I reluctantly sold to a friend and should have kept. He loves it.
He asked me about the GB mod I could do if he so desired. After about 12 months "I'll get it over to you..." it finally made it back to me.
First off I tell everyone, when modd'ing there's alway the chance of everything going bad fast and you'll be left with a bag-o-parts.
When doing a mod for others, you better have a back up plan in place. In this case there was an Outlaw with 2 coils.
The mods went perfect without a hitch, cleaned the pots, popped the battery in place, turned on the power switch and not a peep.
Called my friend and said we don't have lift off...................initial check couldn't find any problems circuitry wise, there was no reason for
it not to power up, checked voltage to the board etc. Checked speaker and headphones, no sound. Will have to set this aside for a future look.
In the meantime after contacting my friend who was in total shock, this is his baby you know, one detector he was never going to get rid of.
Told him to come over and pick up a replacement to get him by with, nice weather "was" here and thought he might getting the itch to go hunt.
Told him the Outlaw had all the features of the modified SS along with 8x9 and 5.75" coil, plus it was only 3 years old and looked new.
I gave him a couple of option being a nice guy that I am. Use the Outlaw until I repair the SS, use the Outlaw if you end up liking it keep it, will call it an even trade.
Emailed him last night, SS is alive. Once buttoned back up and ready to hunt with, told him to come over, no hurry mind you. He is missing it...still gave him the option of
keeping the Outlaw or swapping back for his SS. I'll be happy with either. By the way, the problem was the on/off switch, went bad.
Back to the mods, it now has a 3 3/4 turn manual GB control. Relocated PP button, was hoping to use a Cibola PP button but, they don't function the same one is on-off the other is off-on. Added a micro size disc/ all metal toggle switch. Added manual/fixed GB toggle switch just in case my friend wasn't quite sure on how to GB when out by himself.
That's my story and I am sticking to it.
Picture below shows what I found in 2 hours when I first bought the SS in an area I thought I hunted out. That was before selling it to my friend.
The other pictures shows the mods before buttoning it back up.
