hi all, here are the results of my last two hunts too. haven't had much time to post due to work. all of this came from an old farm field that was on general lee's retreat route, once being a large plantation which had the great house [inaccessable] and several slave cabins on the land. someone detected the grounds many years ago, and no doubt got some real goodies too. i had found some nice union buttons nearby, so i was mystified as to why we couldn't find any more last weekend. i found the 1932 p quarter and a couple of wheats last weekend. sooo....
....i took the time out today to talk to the landowner a little more in depth about things. he and his wife were real nice, and pointed to their backyard, saying an old slave cabin used to be there. now they really had my attention! nobody had ever stopped to ask them about the old place, so they never told anybody about it! an old black man lived there up into the 1920's and was a well - known chauffeur. it turned out that i had the right idea all along, knowing that union troops had stopped by the old plantation. i just wasn't looking in the right place. so, off i went.
there's a decent u.s. beltplate in the center, a little beat up, but hey, it's real! a solid brass comb piece, a couple of old flat buttons, some cheap but old jewelry pieces, a large knapsack rivet with the leather, a chauffeur badge, half of a bank token, a compact top, brass hardware, a half fork, the 1932p quarter, a 1913 cent, and a crotal bell [not pictured]. of course, there came a sackful of whatzits and scrap brass and copper.
