My last 1/2 dime and shield nickels after cleaning

Ken(IL)

I found this 1/2 dime the other day also got a fatty Indian and a 2 cent piece. The shield nickels are from the last 4 hunts. 1-before picture of 5 of them and 2 pics of the after. Here's what the look like now after an 8 hour lemon juice soaking. These nickels have been in a field for over 137 years. Time has taken a toll on them, but I didn't have much to loose so I got the red off but the dates are still tough to make out. I put about 1/4" of lemon juice in a plastic dish and poured some salt in after I poured the juice in. The salt is to keep the coins just up off the bottom so both sides will get the red removed at the same time. I personally like them this color better than red. I'm going to give them a little more time in the juice and see if the dates clear up a bit. I don't like using the nic-a-date on them I like to keep the look uniform although I'm sure the nic-a-date if put all over the coin might do the same?

I've always used the lemon juice just a personal preference. Just thought I'd share in case some of you want to work on them nickels. I'm sure there's a few other ways as well if any of you have had good luck with nickels let's hear it. I'm also soaking the last 2 fatty's I might post them too if they turn out ok. Of course all these coins are porus after the soaking but they were'nt in MS condition the way they were either. The weather is getting ready to put an end to hunting for a while so good luck to the rest of you that will be able to hunt. Ken
