My homemade plastic scoop

HawaiiTreasure

New member
I wonder why plastic scoops are not available? I had to make my own. It is very light weight, it floats and it is very durable. It digs up a full basket of wet sand with no problem. It will even scoop through a top layer of small rocks. The handle can be removed or replaced (although I have never broken one). It screws into the basket. It has a sliding tether so it doesn't tangle. And I attached a spade to the end of the shaft. The most important thing about my plastic scoop is that I can pass it over the coil and know instantly if I picked up a target. On many occasions I have had multiple items in a hole. If I scoop out and check the hole and still get a hit, that doesn't mean I didn't also have one in the basket. With a metal basket you have to dump it out, then check the discarded, then re scoop the same pile if there was a hit. Seems like a waste of time, and a chance to loose a treasure if you are dumping it in waste high water. The plastic basket is very ridged and has a thick rim. It was imported from Japan. Not sure of the original use, but it works great as my scoop.

Very nice. Only one comment , I thought that it would be better to have the stick angled back rather than forward. Good job otherwise.

That certainly is an interesting and clever setup. It seems amazing to me that it would hold up for more than a hunt or two though, in terms of durability. Wet sand is HEAVY and digging in wet sand is tough on galvanized or even stainless steel scoops. It seems that your scoop will come apart after fairly little regular use. I could be wrong about that, but that would be my guess. You say you've used it in wet sand and even rocks...how much have you used it? If it has the required durability then I'd say you have a big hit on your hands.

and it has held up for more than one hunt ???????
Cmon I was born at night.....but not last night!!
unless of course your wetsand has the consistency (and weight) of Cotton candy !!
uh....ok...I've wasted enough of my valuable time commenting on this....
LOL

Hey, if I had a dollar for everything I ever didn't know and had to be shown BETTER about I think I'd be a rich man. So while I BELIEVE that this scoop would last about as long under normal use as your average condom, I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt. I mean, it looks like a lot of work went into it.

I've rarely been accused of being "civil", but is that a little better???

Sometimes ya just have to tell it like it is....not all the time mind you....but I just couldn't help myself that time LOL

I mean.....Cmon Already !!!

Can'tcha just feel the Testosterone rush !!! :hot:

A plumber with a rusty set of tools who is more determined will do better then the plumber with a new set of tools who is NOT! However, the scoop does seem like it will work, but one caveat.....If it does break while being in the middle of digging up that wonderful gold tone, hhhhhmmmmmm, you better hope you have a snorkel and some goggles etc if your in the water......

Now I guess I know why they aren't readily available - TOO MANY SCEPTIC. I am new to this and only have ten hunts in waste high water but I have used only this scoop (I have no other). I know it's a low number of hunts, but I have pulled out over 1000 coins and an equal number of trash items. Considering that every scoop doesn't have the target (maybe 1 in 4) That means I've scooped about 6000 - 8000 scoops of sand. Go figure, it keeps on ticking. You are right, you have spent to much of your time commenting on this, you need your time to sift every scoop you dig up or re-scoop it.

Odd that you would be asking Mike to be less civil. You seem miserable, are you looking for company from Mike? He doesn't think it's a good idea either, but at least he's not trying to belittle me. You might not have been born last night, but it sounds like it was about 5 years ago... grow up.

The conditions must be very different or I must be doing something wrong. I can imagine my scoop breaking but what could possible cause metal to fail. Hope that doesn't sound like I don't believe it, I'm just perplexed. The reason I am believing it, is that I met a hunter with a metal scoop which had a wood pole. It was very thick (karate pole- he told me) and an hour later he came by with the pole snapped. I can't imagine how much force is necessary to snap a pole that thick, or break metal.

It's not that I don't think it's a good idea, it's a great idea. As far as the whole thing being non-metallic, I mean. But I have a heavy duty galvanized scoop that is a hell of a lot stronger than that and I've had to have it welded twice over 3 seasons of hunting due to cracks and bending. So it seems unlikely that your scoop would hold up. But since it obviously IS holding up so far seems to be working for you, far be it from me to question it. I don't think it would last 5 minutes at my beach though, digging in hard-packed wet sand for targets that are 6 to 12 inches deep and more. That kind of hunting is very tough on scoops. You obviously aren't doing that kind of hunting. It's probably the difference between our beaches and yours. The sand out there in waist deep water where you are may be a lot finer and easier to dig...I don't know. But as Wayne said, "Party on, Garth!"

The sand here is quite fine. It doesn't seem to take much effort to scoop it up, and it sifts out of the basket easily. It does work for me and I guess I will send off for a real scoop when this one gives up. Thanks for your comments. You are right ..."party on" is the right attitude. Too late to retract the comments directed at surfdigger, but never to late to appologize. He didn't deserve it, he was expresing his opinion. I like it and that is all that should matter.

plastic and particle board does not make a good scoop in my opinion ........ but hats off to you , all the particle board I have encountered doesnt do well in water .......you have found the magic panacea .........:clapping:

you must agree that scoops really take some paaaaain , i too have broken a wooden shafted scoop, and i also own the half round s/steel version made by the same firm as mikes, and i now have to do a quick welding job on it before i go to Ibiza on monday .When you consider the leverage on a 48" shaft and of course us BIG BOYS stomp on them you gotta think POOR THINGS !!!!
A good scoop is a very important part of my kit, I know when the wooden shaft broke it was game over !! Its a good job it was the last day of my holiday and not the first !!!
I too have considered a plastic scoop ?? perhaps with modern materials and design its possible ??

.....they show something as flimsy as that and claim that many targets dug with it.....another question.....was that a picture of the scoop before you used it for the first time? I just know that after 30 years doing this....I know what holds up and what doesn't and I see no signs of use on that scoop in that picture. I dunno, Sometimes logic and practical experience wins out over my whimsical spirit. Call me a skeptic but I just don't buy it....not trying to be nasty just trying to get at the truth thats all.....don't take it personally.....JMHO....Brian
