My hats off to Mr. Bill and his mods.

I just picked up an IDX Pro with Mr. Bills mods. I lucked out and found one in excellent condition. I've been using the Whites 5900/6000 series for over 20 years as my main detectors and tried an IDX (unmodified) a few years back. It was a good detector but I wasn't impressed as far as depth enough to keep it long. I spent some time bench testing the new Modified IDX Pro today and then hit my 20 year old test garden. I don't rely on air tests when it comes to depth in real world hunting conditions but damn Mr. Bill, I don't know what you tweaked but this detector will air test a silver dime quite a bit further than any detector I've ever owned and I've owned quite a few different makes thru the years. Ground balancing was easy and it picked up everything in my test garden with ease also. Now I need to take it to one of my ghost towns or lumber camps to see how it performs at these Iron infested sites. I'm impressed with the detector and especially Mr. Bills mods. so far.

Will the 8 inch Black Max coil that came standard on the Classic II SL work on the IDX Pro? I thought I heard somewhere that the Classic I and II SL coils were not interchangeable with the Classic III SL and IDX series models. I know the the 8 inch Royal and the Blue Max work. Thanks!

Look at the outside ear of the search coil where the bolt goes throught it. Look at the number stamped there. If it's stamped 6B, ( I doubt it will be), it would not work properly on the IDX.

In later years Whites may have changed the coil differences. This I am not sure of. If the coil is stamped HI, or 8B in will work for sure. These coils are known as BM350, BM600, BM5.3, BM800, BM7.8, Royal 800, BM950, BM1500. There may be more numbes since this list was aquired by me.

I also want to thank Bill for checking out my IDX. He was kind enough to not even charge me for his time. He really knows how to keep a customer happy. He even called me to explain what he found. Personal attention is not dead. Rob

Mr. Bill is very knowleadgeable! And he has a wide choice of rare MDs in stock for sale. A very solid man. Guy.

[size=large]out the praises of "Mr.Bill's" modifications on Classic III SL's, Classic ID's, Classic IDX and IDX Pro's. While I am enjoying some hunting time with my new XLT, I never leave my modified IDX Pro behind because I know that ... overall ... it is the better performer when you get right down to raw depth, raw performance, trash handling, and being able to work in and around annoying iron junk.

I'm glad you have latched onto a choice specimen, :) ... but feel sorry for the individual who just didn't learn it or appreciate it and let it go. :(

All the best in your hunting afield. I keep a 6

I know air tests aren't a reliable indication on how a detector performs on targets in the ground but this detector is hitting a thin seated dime at 12 inches and a silver quarter at a little over 14 inches in disc. mode in air tests. Are they all this hot? I can run the sensitivity at max not only in the house with all the electrical interference but also in my nasty mineralized ground up here without any falsing. I'm not sure yet if it's as deep as my Minelab Advantage or XL Pro ( in hotrock accept mode ) as all three hit the deep targets in my test garden about the same. I need to bury some deeper targets I guess. The IDX Pro does seem to chirp on the hotrocks up here so I'll have to come up with a setting to quiet it down on these rocks. They read in the far right 50 cent $1 ID area. I'm not able hunt with my XL Pro in the hotrock accept mode either. Way to noisy. It will be interesting to see how it compares to my Minelab Advantage at some of my iron infested ghost towns and logging camps.

If I can find a decent one, I'll pick it up.

I managed to get the XLT to work everywhere. Well most everywhere. It stumbled a bit in my trashy back yard, and that;s how I discovered the Classic series thanks to Monte. It was Monte that started it all for me with the Classics. Thank you Monty. :clapping:

Hello.
I have a "MrBilled IDX PRO" (thanks to Monte and Bill).
I have just bought a 256 widescan coil (11 inches DD), which works quite good (even if not perfectly) with the audio but has an awuful target ID.
I know that it is a 6B coil, so in theory (and in some way even in practice) shouldn't work on the new 6,592 Khz White's line.
I would like to know if it is possibile to modify the coil in order to make it work with my IDX.
I think that the new 6,592 Khz White's line lacks of a 9-11 inches widescan coil.
Regards
Daniele

I also would like to thank Monte for posting his experiences using the Classic's and due to those posts i ended up with an IDX Pro and Mr.Bill performed his Super Mods and made a very nice detector a Super detector in my opinion and would like to again thank Monte for espousing the Virtues of the classic's and Mr Bill for Kicking them up a major Notch. The XLT seems to be soon relegated to the manufactured graveyard and thankfully bought a nice used Eagle Spectrum (again) after reading many of Monte's posts a few years ago and a newer XLT when i had the money to splurge and come to appreciate how great a detector it still is and wish Whites would revive the 6.59kHz detectors with DD coils that work on them. Just my opinion of course. Thanks again guy's for being such a great asset to the hobby. HH Bill

The last time we PM'ed each other is when I was interested in Mrand's multi tone modification of the XL PRO,and upon hearing how scarce they are I have just about given up on trying to buy one.The last I had heard of his mod's, is that he is experimenting on an Explorer type of multi tone signals for the XL PRO. If these mods become more available I'd probably be interested in buying one for my XL PRO.

I hope that you do well with your Mr. Bill's modified IDX PRO, because I sure do like mine!!!! I keep reading posts from different folks on the forums that claim they are getting spectacular air depth tests on their particular detector, which does not impress me one bit. What I like about my modified IDX PRO is the way it finds good targets naturally buried in and about the rusty nails that are abundant in the places that I like to hunt.

For example, at an old victorian homestead, that was on the city's demolition list, I gained permission to hunt it.I was useing my IDX PRO, I set the machine to maximum sensitivity, my discrmination set to the 9 o'clock position on the dial ( this will just knock out a rusty 3 1/2 inch nail). The coil in use this day was the 5.3 bullseye, and the IDX was running smooth. It was'nt very long before I recieved a good penny signal.I got down on the ground and proceeded to dig, found a wheat penny at about 5 inches deep.I use an electronic pinpointer to clean up a plug hole, and kept getting more signals. The next item out of the hole was a rusty 4 inch nail, and the signals just kept a comming! In total I found 8 wheat pennys mixed in with a handfull of rusty nails.Impressive performance to say the least!!!! HH..............Hombre

Hi Hombre.
Megadivers and Tinfoil are happy owners of a multitone XL PRO.
A friend of mine has got a multitone kit, I can ask him if he sells it (he didn't install it yet).
Anyway, we are looking around to modify the IDX PRO with a multitone kit both for the disc and the all metal mode.
I think that three or four tones in all metal could be a killer application, it is so fast, but looking the screen take some time.
