With the help of my friends MD I found my first wheatie today. Boy, was I excited. Here are some pic's. Thanks Charlie.

Congrats !! A nice old one too !!

Hi Charlie,

That is a nice 1916 wheat cent. looks to be like a "S" mint mark? It is my belief that if a wheat cent is found.... there is more to find at that particular location. If you can, borrow your friend's detector for another outing at the site you found this penny. Super find! - Jim

More detecting........................What kind of detector you going to get ??

I actually found two wheaties in the same hole. I haven't cleaned the other one yet but it looks to be dated 1920. I found 6 wheaties all total, one Jefferson,i small copper token and 3 cupra-zincs. I also found a WW1 lead soldier sans feet, a 1966 Mustang Fastback Matchbox. My friend who was with me found a bunch of wheaties and several silver pieces. I am addicted, I used his Whites DFX but I've got an AT PRO on the way. My personal detector at this time is a Garrets 350GTA. I've not learned its tricks yet. I found a few cupra-zincs but mostly trash. I have gone from all metal with it to notching out everything but coins. It gives me a strong sound and indicates a coin but when I dig I get nails. I will say one thing it goes deep. I've dug nails at 12" plus. If I could just figure it out it maybe a good back-up. The 1916 wheatie is an S mint mark.

I was thinking you borrowed your friends for a first time detecting experience.. "Shoot" You were already addicted LOL

Elton. It is true I'm a newbie to metal detecting. I bought the Garret GTA to get started. All I found was trash and was getting discouraged. A friend Charlie offered to let me try his Whites DFX. I started finding clads like crazy. I was hooked and decided to upgrade my machine. He hunts with an Etrac which far out distants me but he has had yrs. of experience. So the concrats, comments and any suggestions as far as this wonderful hobby are very welcome. It's like I want to get out and do it every day. Someone called it ground or dirt fishing which I thought was most apropo. I do love fishing also.
