My first taste of a trashy area

Ever since my wifes grandmother died last month,1/03/08,seems like we been going to Macon GA. every other weekend. Before that about once per 6 weeks.
Anyway, her parents live in an old house, small lot, poor section of town.
The house next door is vacant, got a sign out front but no one's lived there in a few years.I went over there and detected the back yard(not big at all),had the stock coil on it and after a few minutes I decided to use the HF 6'' coil.Man did it make a difference, once I found a high pitch I would move it only a few inches, seems like a coin and nail could be 3'' apart and I was able to only pick up the coin (or pull tab).
Did'nt get nothing of value, just a few modern pennies, one quarter,Chevette enblem, and of course pull tabs and screw caps, but it was fun.
I'll be back over there next time we go,get all trash out of the way and there might be some good coins deeper.

There's probably some oldies under that trash if the house has any age to it. Keep working with the small coil and try to eliminate most of the surface trash just as you are doing. Good luck, Ron

Would I need to remove the - numbers also?
Because there is alot of nails or something in that yard,in AM mode it sounds off the low tones every inch it seems.Like someone took handfulls of nails and scattered them.I cant dig all those up,but would it keep coins from being detected?

That sounds like a tough site, you might be better off straying off the lawn and away from the trash and give your ears a rest. I don't have enough patience for real trashy sites, to be honest, but if you do then work slowly and dig everything that sounds remotely good. if you get a target with some negative numbers mixed in with positive numbers, dig it as it could be a coin next to a nail. I don't know what you are using for discrimination or tones, but try Program #2 and 3 and 2 tones. Ron

Its either detect there, stay in the house and watch TV,or go with my wife as she takes her mom to get her hair done, grocery shopping and maybe the Good Will.

I dont know which program, but mostly hunted the one with all iron out and then some middleways in the coins.Tried AM,beeped too much, and also tried out the 99 tones, woa, that was like speakin spanish to me.

Another question about trashy areas,

If there is a nut or something over a coin, would it not pick up the coin?
Even if in DISC mode, block out the iron but pick up a coin,or would it just register the iron?

I've only been detecting lately for about two months, but for years in the eighties, with my experience, I can hear the two seperate items, swing slow and step on the other side of your targets and try to sweep to the edges of it. You should be able to pick up both hits, I watch my target id and it blips up both numbers, 38 and then a negative number, always check your "empty" hole after you have recovered your target, alot of times there are more than one targets together. Have Fun
