My first steel penny....

...barely. I'll explain. This one apparently slipped under the radar when I found it. I have no idea how ?!? I was running my clad through the change-counter at the bank and it spit out a handful of "sub-par" coins it didn't like. I was going to toss it out with a couple of bad zincolns that had also slipped through (I'm going to have to fire my QC guy) but I noticed it had a strange tarnish to it. I instantly suspected what it was but I couldn't believe it was and since my glasses were at home I had to wait until I got back there to check it out. It's a 1943 S. What's that they say about it being better to be lucky than good ? Only problem is I have no idea where I found it. Guess I'm gonna have to hunt them all again....darn!

Cool and glad you found it...again. I'm still looking for my first steel cent.

Nice find, haven't got one of those yet. Congrats!

Congrats on finding one of the ever illusive steel pennies . The are hard to find and match the dirt , there so easy to miss when digging in a hole . I think I have two now but I was just lucky to find them . I cleaned my dirty pennies in the tumbler the other day and like you I found a coin in them I had missed also , mine was a 1910 wheat tho . I have no idea where I found it at or when but I had missed it and threw it in with the regular dirty pennies anyway . Your steel is a good find and you can mark that one off your list now . Good Job

I've had that happen several times recently Harold. I can't fire my Q.C. guy, though, because he has two teenagers and isn't responsible for anything he does anymore.

Great find indeed. They're very hard to find. I've found two so far but the first one was with a regular wheat cent. That's a keeper for sure! HH, Nancy

how do u know if they are still or not. I found a 1942 wheat the other day that acted funny on my detector
Apparently I'm no expert on idenfifying coins, this one got by me initially. The "steel" pennies were only minted in 43' and they have a silvery/grey color to them. They look very different than the copper pennies. I'm not sure if they made both types of pennies in 1943 but my Blackbook seema to show that only steel pennies were minted in 43' so the date would be the clincher. I could be wrong.

My blue book says the same. 43' only coated in zinc.

I remember seeing some of these in my dad's coin jar as a kid. Were they the ONLY type pennies made that year?

nice find, haven't ever found one myself, I remember being able to buy them out of a toy machine at the old K-mart when I was lots younger so hopefully some kid lost theirs at school and I'll be able to find it one day. Jimmie

I am no coin expert but the way my blackbook is written it appears that they WERE the only type of pennies minted that year but I could be mistaken.

Without question the only one made that year... Rumors of copper ones do exists.
If you were to find the alleged copper 43 it would be worth in the $100 thousands of dollars even in poor shape.
