MY FIRST SILVER COIN

arandenburg

New member
Well I started detecting 25 yrs ago when my Dad got his Whites coinmaster 6000 and he gave me his Radio Shaft special. I used to have more fun digging his holes then running off on my own. He sent me that Whites Coinmaster about 6 years ago and I didn't have as much luck with it as he did so last year I bought the Explorer SE. I have found lots of clad but never any silver  I purchased the new SEF coil last week and this was my third time out with it and I got a hit that read 3 28 and I thought it was a dime. When I flipped that plug over and saw that Silver Half I almost went into shock. I was expecting a dime. So about a hour after finding that I went home and cleaned up all my finds and noticed that the penny that I thought was a wheat penny turned out to be a Indian Head! I can't make out the date so it's soaking in olive oil right now so maybe soon. I couldn't believe it, my first silver and my first Indian head all in the same day.

I LOVE THIS GAME!!
:lmfao:

That has to feel good. Took me 3 years to find my first silver half, also a Walker. And found my second Walker a few weeks later--it was my first coin found with the new Pro coil.

Sounds like you've either found a good spot or it's starting to click more for you.

Anent 3-28: Was it really deep? Did you forget to recheck the hole in your excitement? :)

(I really need to put some bug dope in my detecting kit--just got home a little bit ago and I'm all bitten up again--you'd think I was back in Wisconsin!)

Thanks X, I didn't recheck the hole? Maybe there was something else hiding in there? It was only about 3" down. I did find a pretty good spot. They just moved the house off the land and the house was late 1800's. I will be out there again as soon as it stops raining

Thanks everyone I worked on the Indian Head and can see it's a 1902. My buddy told me to use tarnex on it to clean all that green off. Does that work?

Big congrats on the find. I have been informed by one of the most knowledgeable local authorities that you should use hot peroxide and a soft tooth brush to clean your nicest coins-NOT olive oil, which has acid in it. What I do is put a small amount of peroxide [no coins yet] in a small jar and heat it for 30-35 seconds in the microwave. Then use a hotpad or cloth of some kind and take the hot jar of peroxide out of the microwave and put the coins into it. [You would have already pre-cleaned the coins with soap, water and a soft toothbrush, of course.] Never POLISH a silver coin with tarnex or anything unless you don't care if you devalue it. After it is clean, put some clear floor paste wax on it and buff it gently to a shine, to preserve it. Don't use olive oil to preserve it, because of its acidic characteristics. All this is just information I have learned from others. I don't want my copper or silver coins made to be less sharp after cleaning than they were when I dug them up. HH Reggie

Thanks Reggie I will take them out of the oil when I get home and try the hot peroxide and tooth brush trick.

AWESOME... That beats my first silver and all my other silver. I would like to find some Liberty Walking Halves

I'm going out tomorrow. I live in SW Florida and it has been raining like a MFer. Tomorrow is my last day of work for a couple of weeks so I will be spending some serious time on the field. I hope to put up some more great posts!:wiggle:

I just got back from SW FL - we were down in Captiva for a week. Too bad I didn't know you were down there - we might have been able to hook up for some land detecting - all the guys down there that I know of r beach hunters.

It couldn't have been any better for your first Silver. It's hard to imagine finding a Half for the first Silver but you did it! Congratulations!!!! Now the Silver should start finding there way into your pouch more often. And Congrats on the Indian Head. Sounds like you are going to have a lot of fun with your New Detector and New Coil. Good Luck and HH.

Cheers everyone I brought on the Native American Head and can see it is a 1902. My paisa no told me to use turned on it to make clean all that green off. Does that work?
