My First SEATED Coin and It's a QUARTER!!! :bouncy:

I went back to a park I have been hunting for several years. I'd been avoiding the main section of the park as I thought it had been filled at one point (I'm now starting to change my mind).

After hunting the section that I'd been concentrating on for the past several years and not finding much - other than this very old cool looking - whatzit (is it a pencil sharpener?, says E Faber on the side).

Started getting dark and I headed into the main section of the park I'd been avoiding and soon dug this metal button and then I found a fairly deep wheatie.

As dark was setting in I got a VERY deep hit near the wheatie and I started digging....and digging. I couldn't see what I was doing any more due to the lack of light and was using my Sun Ray probe in pinpoint mode to zero in on the hit. I was starting to think it was a very deep piece of larger junk.

Finally popped a large silver disc....was too dark to see what it was, but I knew it was a very old coin! Turns out to be a well worn 1876 S Seated Quarter!

Seated coins have eluded me up to now (though have found a couple of Standing Liberty quarters in the past), so finding a seated quarter and an S-minted one at that was a real treat.

The coin sounded like a very deep cent and did not hit as silver - I suppose that's because of that fact that it's so worn. This quarter has seen a lot of use!

Note some spots of the green corrosion on the back, leading me to believe that it may have been next to an old cent coin which I may have missed.

Was a minor miracle that I didn't gouge this coin as it was very deep and I was slightly off on the pinpoint. There are a few scratches on the back, but they are not mine. Note the green corrosion under the right wing of the eagle - will have to go back and check the hole!

That is the best way to break the ice I can think of for a seated coin. Usually it is dimes that show up but a quarter is quite rare. Congratulations and will be waiting to see what you left in the hole. If anything. WTG

Thanks JB -- it was ironic that it was my last target of the evening...now it's got me wondering what other items lie hidden beneath the surface in that section of the park I'd essentially given up on a long time ago. In digging tonight, it didn't seem that it had been filled as I thought.....maybe the coins are just deeper there.

You definetly left a coin in the hole where you found that Quarter! 2 yrs ago I dug a Seated Dime that had a V-Nickel on both sides of it and it looked exactly like that with the green stuff on it. You better go back and check that plug out because it could be anything for a second coin. And by the date, it could be an Indian in the 60's-80's, a Nickel or maybe even a Dime. Hope to hear what was with it in that plug and Good Luck and HH.

Hi James,

Yes, I wish I could have seen what I was doing. It was a minor miracle that I didn't gouge this one! Should be interesting to see what else is down there.

Regards, Erik

That first seated coin is really a thrill, congratulations and I hope now that you've broken the ice there are many more in the future.

Thanks 69scrounge,

I hope that's the case...this seated was a long time coming. It's also my oldest silver coin too, so it was a double treat for me.

Regards, Erik

Your first seated is in better shape than my first V- Nickle.........
There's More where that came from........Good luck.

Erik,

Nice coin! I can still remember my first seated like it was yesterday! :D

Yeah, but the hard part is finding them.....there seems to be a lot of deep Lincoln's there which means the good stuff is probably super deep. I'll try hitting it a few times and will see what I can find.

Thanks Bill. I feel like it was just yesterday too - oh yeah, it was  I hope the next one doesn't take me as long as the first.

Great find. That is awesome. Even more rewarding to me when I find the old coins in well hunted areas.

Bob

Thanks Bob. It certainly was a nice surprise - especially after most of the hunt had been for the most part fruitless.
