My First Ring! :yikes:

Hi everyone,

I've only posted a few times here so far. I've lurked around the forums for about a year which is how long I've had my Garrett Ace 250. I'm still very much a newbie at MDing but I've been reading up on the forums getting all the tips I can. Well, I was out MDing in my parents front yard for lack of anywhere else to hunt. Their house was built in 1959. Low and behold I dig a silver saddle shaped ring outta the ground. I think it was around 8 inches deep. I had my sensitivity maxed out cuz I wanted to find the deepest which usually equals oldest stuff. So, my first thought was "hmm...kinda unusual design for a ring...let's go google it". So I did, and come to find out it is a Roy Rogers Sterling Silver Saddle Ring. I believe it was made in the 50's during the whole Roy Rogers craze. The first 3 pics are of the ring I found that I took with my web cam (which isn't very good quality  ) and the latter ones are of the same ring that I found online in mint condition.

I also had a few questions. Before I ask, this ring is a keeper and I'm not trying to get it in perfect condition to sell. So, with that out of the way, how should I clean it? I've already tried some standard liquid silver jewelry cleaner, toothpaste & toothbrush, that whole aluminum foil/boiling water/baking soda trick. I've been thinking about trying that homemade electrolysis thing but haven't done that yet.

You did great!!
Seems like you have done a lot of the old standbys for cleaning the ring. I clean my silver rings with tooth paste and a cloth, but yours would be hard to clean that way. Maybe if you have a dremel tool you could do it more easily. Most of the time silver rings in the ground need to have the scratches polished out. It is going to be work.

I would try electrolysis. Ir if you know a jeweler have them clean this first ring. I think it is a very nice ring and would be proud to have recovered it!

khouse is right the best way to restore its beauty is through electrolysis. It is a very simple process and will not damage the base metal if it is silver. That sure is a great find. Congratulations !!!

That is a cool ring. I would be very careful cleaning it. I saw one on the net with his signature in the saddle. Does yours have that or any other markings?

LOL Graw...nope horse was nowhere to be found. Well, that electrolysis was very interesting to watch. Or either I'm just easily amused. But I think I over did it because I noticed the DC adapter getting warm so I was gonna let it cool down and then try it again later. But, later it didn't work LOL. Ooops  So, I'll have to get another adapter somewhere that I can use. It did clean it a lot but there is still a few places left to be cleaned. Nope Awhister, mine doesn't have a signature in the saddle or any other markings. When I was googling I saw that same ring you are talking about, the one with the signature in it. Well, whenever I finally get it all cleaned and purty looking I'll post the finished look in another pic.:)

Real nice ring! You found a beauty for your first!

I DID A ELECTROLYSIS CLEANING WITH A 12 VOLT CAR BATTERY CHARGER,AND MAN DID THAT PENNY ''BOIL''IT NEARLY DISSOLVED IT.SO BE CAREFUL OF THIS TYPE OF CLEANING.
