My First Privy Dig

Glamorous work this digging privies is!

This is my first time at this, and although very challenging, I think it could ultimately be worth the effort.

This shot was taken yesterday when I was about 31/2 to 4 feet down.I'm now at 6 feet, and it's becoming more difficult. I an finding pieces of relics that deep, so I'm convinced I need to go a bit deeper to get to the good stuff. So far I've found broken tools, broken bottles, nails and various other pieces.

The privy appears to have been lined with rocks, and when it was back-filled large rocks were dropped into the hole. Needless to say digging ain't easy!

I'm deep enough now that I have a safety concern of a cave-in. Maybe somebody can give me some advice about this.

How deep do you think I should go? I have yet to find any whole bottles etc., but I'm still finding little things that keep me digging.

Best,
Rick

Rabid, suggestion look around the neighborhood to see if any one has a backhoe 50-100 bucks may get you down to the bottom area and help make a little wider to make it safe.If this is on a open field this could be a real safety hazard left unattended?

I know a man who was caught in a collapsed wall. It wasn't good... He was injured terribly.

BE CAREFUL !! Please

That why they make a thing called a trench box that you can rent. But if your going to go thru that trouble your going to need machinery to put it in.You might as well rent a mini excavator,it doesn't take a rocket scientist to run one..Just my two cents worth. And PS in keeping with OSHA rules and regs you just might be braking the laws without a trench box if your deep enough to cause a potential ground collapse, especially if ground is unstable.you need to put up barriers and flag it off also.If somebody falls in hole and gets hurt your looking at a lawsuit also ! Take care _ _ _ _ digger

Thanks guys,

The hole is on my proerty and fenced-off. I like the idea of making it wider, but was afraid of damaging the integrity of the rock-lined wall that seems to surround it.

I'm going to play it safe however I proceed.

Thanks again!

Rick

What, in the h*e*l*l do you think could possibly be in that pit worth risking your life for? I surely hope you've taken care of your family's future before you started digging. You wouldn't find me doing something like that if I knew the key to the local Cat House, was at the bottom. :stretcher:
Good luck partner. Oh but, what detector were you using caused you to start this project? :goodnight:

I don't know what's at the bottom of the hole, and therin lies the attraction. That's why we all dig, right? If I knew the key to the local cathouse was there it would completely remove the allure. (well mostly).

I wouldn't risk my life either, which is why I have stopped until I figure out a way that's completely safe.

I'm using a Garrett 1350.

Thank you for being concerned. It just show what great bunch of people are on this forum!

If it's lined with rocks, are you sure it's not an old well? I dug a well at my mom and dads place one time. It had been filled in for better than 50 years. About 5 to 6 feet down the ground started getting mushy. Seems the lined walls still held water. I decided to pass on digging deeper.
Good Luck with your dig.

Good Luck with your dig.

I suppose that's a possibility. However there are year-round creeks flowing just a few yards from the dig, so it really wouldn't make sense to dig & maintain a well.

Dave maybe right. I been at this for about 45 years off an on. Never seen a privy with a rock wall.
But you never know.
